Behind the scenes look at Comments of the Week! (Also, fuck it, totally NSFW!)

   0

Hi, there! I asked earlier if you fine folks would like to read about some of the behind the scenes details about Comments of the Week, and some of you seemed genuinely interested! So, I'm going to take the time to explain a couple of random musing about some of the work that goes into the series. Since it's unorganized, there's probably a good chance that I'll miss something that you may have wanted to know about. If so, leave a comment down below and I'll get to that!

You're probably wondering why the blog is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. Well, I included some screencaps that contain NSFW material, so I figured, fuck it: go balls out!

So how and why did you start?

Back some 40 odd weeks ago, there was a comment that had a ton of upvotes. I don't necessarily recall exactly what it was, but a lot of people found it funny. Occams made a short comment about how it would've been featured on Comments of the Week if it still existed, and I inquired as to what that was. He told me that it was a series where someone — CaptainBus/ Sean Daisy — would gather up comments and basically compile them together in one spot.

Normally, it was something that you would go "oh, that sounded lovely" and move on, but it got me thinking about resurrecting it. While I don't know for sure what happened (and don't remind me), the community wasn't exactly all rainbows and sunshine at the time. Plenty of folks left the site for one reason or another, and some were members I personally loved seeing around. In a way, I think Comments was a much-needed feature that needed to come back, so I decided to revive it.

As some of you might have noticed, I actually made an account for Destructoid in 2009. Although I was a silent lurker, I remembered a lot of the great staff members who used to be here like Dale North, Chad Concelmo, and of course Jim fuckin' Sterling (who most likely hated me T^T). When I decided to make a prototype of Comments of the Week, like a proof-of-concept mockup, I needed to go back and see what it used to look like. After reading a couple, the memories of old Destructoid came pouring in, from Sterling lying the smackdown to other odd hijinks like the forum image spams.

Afterwards, it made me wonder if Comments of the Week were the reason I even made a Dtoid account. I figured, if it was, it would only make sense that I would be the one to bring it back.
Though, between you and me, I might've made an account to enter a contest :P

Original intent and ideas

Originally, Comments of the Week was supposed to be a group project. Much like the Cblog Recaps, there would've been multiple people that had their own "day" to scout comments, then each would submit their own images. I would've taken the role of compiling them all together, and then have them up every Sunday. At the time, a lot of people weren't necessarily able to contribute to the project — it didn't help that a lot of people had finals either — so I ended up tackling it alone. I always thought that it would only be temporary, but I guess I just kept doing it all myself! :P

Another idea that was SUPPOSED to pan out was featuring guests, much like how CaptainBus sometimes had Handy as a co-host. Essentially, I would've emailed all the images to the guest, then they would email back an opening, a closing, and any commentary to the comments I selected. This is why you always see "Dreamweaver" in bold: originally, it was supposed to be me and one other person. As of now, you already KNOW it's me talking because I'm the only one working on it! :P

It's still something that I'm very much interested in doing. However, there's two things preventing me from doing so. One, I usually post a new edition every Sunday, but that's also when I finish doing all the grunt work. By the time I finish editing, I usually submit it to the Cblog editor immediately to get it out of the way since... well, I just wanna be done with it! :P Two, the future of Comments of the Week is a bit unstable, so I don't want to introduce something like that now if I need to stop doing this soon :(

Finally, there was one idea that I'm sad to see cancelled. A couple of months ago, previous forum dweller, recapper, and lovable community member Luna Sy was originally going to team up to include forum comments into Comments of the Week, like the original series had. Unfortunately, after the forums were shut down, Luna Sy pretty much went into hiding and I feel like trying to do it now would... make me feel bad, I guess? Luna really pushed for it to happen, so it feels kinda wrong doing it without them.

So, what do you each week?

Every Monday morning, I go back to as much of Sunday's front page articles as I can and simply scan through whatever I can find. Normally, I set my Disqus to show "best" comments first... because, let's be honest, they're usually the gems. I do try to look at every single comment, but since I'm more about spreading my net (-tar, if you know what I mean :3), I try not to devote too much time on any single article.

I usually spend anywhere from an hour to an hour-and-a-half scouting every day (well, from Monday to Firday), so the more places I go, the better. Again, "best comments" usually filters out the fluff, though sometimes I do scan through for upvotes in the lower half of the list in case someone said something... not popular, and someone else lays the smackdown. :3

I don't know if you think an hour a day (it's usually more than) is a lot, but it's one reason why I mostly keep myself in the front page articles. After reading so many comments, my eyes also get tired and fatigued. Admittedly, it does get to a point where I become... less easily impressed, so sometimes comments do get lost to the ether simply because I stop being attentive after a while. To help cope with it, I try to either have a funny TV show in the background, music in my headphones... or porn. I'm quite serious about that one too. :3

If I see something I like, then it gets placed into three categories: considered, nominated, and shoe-in. Shoe-ins are obvious: anything that typically made me laugh out loud are usually guaranteed to be featured. Nominated means it did make me chuckle, and I'll make a note in my Comments of the Week template to review later. Considered means I MIGHT record it down, but only if I feel like it has potential to pass "re-evaluation."

So how do you choose what gets in?

Essentially, it's a mix between the quality of the comment, and whether or not I can provide context. This is extremely important: as a "comedian" of sorts, being able to set up the joke is crucial to getting a laugh. I usually have to look through the article and hope that there's enough information that, if I can "get" the readers to read it (the highlighted text is usually the bare minimum you should read, aside from headers and subtitles), then the joke would make sense whether you know the reference by heart, or are simply hearing about it for the first time. I actually had to turn down several genuinely funny comments because there's no way to include context, or make it fit within constraints (more on that later).

There's something of an exception to the rule though. Like how you don't need to cite sources in a research paper for "common knowledge" (water is H20, for example), there's some references that I think most people would know. Half-Life 3 never being released is one, Sonic Boom being a terrible game is another. There are others though that are much harder to gauge, but in essense, I try to limit these, as I hope all the jokes I include are both funny, and accessible to everyone.

Speaking of, let's talk about images, gifs, and memes that everyone uses. For the most part, these do not make it in. Handy gave me the advice that these are COMMENTS of the Week, and thus I should try to restrict featuring "easy" upvotes. I'm glad he did: there were several times, even now, where I want to consider an image-only comment, but I stop. Plus, you see a lot of the same ones anyway. The exceptions to the "no images rule" is usually: images necessary to provide context to another joke (someone commenting on the image itself, for example), images being used as a prop to a joke, images being used as an accessory to a comment I would've featured anyway (though if it's TOO large, I actually have to reconsider it... hint hint) and anything that YOU Photoshopped. If I don't know for sure you made it, I usually won't feature it.

Is there more to it?

You bet! After scanning through Friday's comments Saturday morning (at this point, I usually spent about 5 - 7 hours working total already), I start cropping images. I go to three articles at a time and re-evaluate the comments. Why do I need to re-evaluate them again? Other than simply making sure it's still funny, it's mainly because, and this is probably going to be controversial, but I actually have BOTH a minimum amount of comments I feature, and a MAXIMUM. While you can understand the minimum, the maximum limit is pretty much to avoid overworking. After all, I've done this for 40+ weeks, I can't go overboard on any one edition! Plus, consistency is key.

Anyway, I don't know if I'm slow or not, but it takes me over four hours to crop all these images. I pretty much do half of it in one go, then the other Sunday morning after releasing my recaps. For reference, sometimes when I'm watching TV, I'll go through multiple TV episodes before I get to the halfway point (in one case, four episodes of AMC's The Walking Dead, which are 40 minutes on DVD). Then, when I have everything, I have to do one more hour of adding an opening, a closing, and small commentary, as well as actually posting the blog. As you can imagine from an image heavy blog, there's a LOT of uploading. T^T

In essense, it takes about 10 hours a week to get one of these babies out. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE Comments of the Week. It gives me a chance to feature my own selection of comments (true story, I actually forget to type "selection of" in the rough draft... and wanted to leave it at that :P), and knowing that people enjoy it makes me happy (remember, upvotes < comments! Leave one if you don't have something to say, but it's always better to spark conversation!)... but man, there's a lot of work behind each one, and it's usually a lot of tedious grunt work. Sometimes I'm able to spice it up, but generally it's a "get it done" kind of thing. :(

That's a lot of work! How do you not fall asleep!?

I try to keep myself entertained. Usually for scouting, I'll watch something like Married... with Children, since it's on around the time I'm here. During the weekends when I'm doing the images, I try to watch whatever. Sometimes, a movie I haven't seen before like Madagascar will pop up and I'll keep it on for curiosity's sake, but generally I'm too focused on working to pay too much attention to it. Music is my main motivator though. It keeps me hyped up enough to keep going. I listen to different kinds of music while working, and my taste may be unusual to some of you. Here's a short list from my YouTube/ iTunes history:

Xenoblade Chronicles X "Uncontrollable"
Xenoblade Chronicles X "Black Tar"
Madworld OST
Anarchy Reigns OST
Jet Set Radio Future OST
September - Earth, Wind, and Fire
Do or Die (Remix) - 30 Seconds to Mars x Afrojack
Freaks (vocal mix) - Timmy Trumpet x Savage
Superman - Goldfinger
Last Friday Night - Katy Perry

Who's that chick? - Rihanna x David Guetta
Love Love Love - Of Monsters and Men
Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men
Marvin's Room - Drake
Take Care - Drake x Rihanna
Rap God - Eminem
All of the Lights - Kanye West
The Show Goes On - Lupe Fiasco
Miracle Paint - OSTER Project x Hatsune Miku
Eat Me - OSTER Project x GUMI
Prayer Will Live - yuukiss x GUMI

You may have noticed some songs are a little slower than others. I usually like to save those for when I'm feeling a bit fatigued and my mind starts to wander. While it can make it harder to come up with funny jokes (do people even read those? 8^8), when I'm just cropping images and such, it allows me to just imagine new creative scenarios for my writing. I like to paint a picture with my mind when it comes to music, so in a way, Comments of the Week's work helps benefits me. Though, the downside is that Comments of the Week also takes up too much time to actually WRITE the stories T^T

Porn also helps me. As you can see in the screencap, I have four slideshow gadgets on the right of my desktop that continuously shows random porn images every 15 seconds. Since the human eye is trained to notice movement, I like to sneak a peek every so often and enjoy what's there before drifting my eyes back.

Oh don't worry, we'll talk about some of porn images one day!

This is the template I use. It was modeled after BBcode because that's what the Cblog Editor used to use (Niero...). When I find something I like, I cut and paste the URL, find the dedicated section that I think it fits under (it's not set in stone), and paste it in the url links. Then I type down the person's name. If the comment I want belongs in a comments chain, then I will write down the order of names that I have to follow to get to it. I also have key words like "continue" (which means scroll down), and "keep going" (for when there's actually TWO jokes in a chain I want to use). Finally, a "(?)" means it's a nominee, whereas a comment without one is 95% sure of getting in (not always though :( ).

And, I think that's it! There's seemingly nothing much else to say, but if you think I didn't cover what you wanted to know, just ask down below!
