Animal Crossing

*Disclaimer*  I have been playing the shit of out Animal Crossing: New Leaf for about a month now.

Do real people actually play these games? I mean, yes, I just admitted to playing them but I'm not a real person.  I'm a horrible example of what a human being could possibly become. When I say real person I mean someone who is... I mean like... at least 75% functional in day to day activities and not constantly fighting off some sort of horrible social anxiety.  Like... doctors or someone...

See, the fact is, I really can't figure out why I keep playing this thing.  It's not really like the story progresses or you unlock cool power ups.  You're just a kid... who lives in a town of animals... hooray?

Perhaps its my love of strategy games like the Total War series or Civilization that keeps drawing me back.  I hear a little voice in the back of my head saying, "Surely there must be a way to take over the towns in Animal Crossing." Like I can't imagine that there isn't something more to the game. Spoiler alert- there isn't.  Alas, you only spend your time within this world talking to villagers or collecting bugs.  Or furniture.  Or really anything else that isn't nailed down.  Go on. You can take it.  And none of them will stop you...

Or more likely, it's the simplicity. Animal Crossing: New Leaf invokes a feeling I haven't felt in a video game for awhile.  It's nostalgic without trying to be. It's simple in every way your favorite Nintendo games used to be and honestly, its a pretty decent representation of childhood.  Your character has to earn money to pay for the things they want but it feels like doing things that kids just do.  You catch fish or collect fossils to sell to the townspeople.  At one point you're made Mayor but your responsibilities are still only limited to doing whatever you want.

I don't know what possessed me to write this up today.  Maybe its the grogginess and lack of sleep resulting from the nasty cold I've been fighting for the last week or so.  Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the days when a real problem was what cartoon to watch Saturday morning. I just figured I'd throw this on here and see what everyone else thought of these games.  If you've ever even heard of them.

Ah hell, who am I kidding.  I still struggle over which cartoon I'll be watching on the weekends.

Hello all!

I woke up one day and realized that I was no longer content not sharing bits of my personal life and opinions with strangers on the internet. In my spare time I enjoy long walks in the rain, breathing, and naming kittens after obscure literary references.
