LONG BLOG

Cblogs Recaps of 02/20 and Striderisms

So Wrench was envious of my position, seeing as how today was the day of the supposed PS4 reveal.

I'm the wrong person to talk to about whatever ray of sunshine we can get out of this. But the reactions across the board seem mixed and I can't nail down a definitive opinion about the whole thing. Lots of people hated it. But then again, we're a hateful bunch of night dwelling, internet trolls after all. We don't like things unless it's ironic. On the other hand though, some people think Sony has learned from a lot of its past mistakes.

I don't care either way. This generation has desensitized me to the idea of having another console generation. I've had my Xbox 360 for a long tme now. I remember a time where buying the Xbox 360 was a painfully important financial decision. I remember when every console generation was a painful financial decision. Up until last year though, I thought I was about to say goodbye to painful financial decisions based on new hardware. Now not only has the Wii U comes out, we're getting announcements on the PS4? I guess I'm gonna have to pick up some extra shifts soon.

But wait! There are some objective points about the PS4 that are clearly weird. I mean, this was an event where the new console was announced and we didn't even see the console we're talking about?

HUH. WEIRD, HUH?

Then I see people poo-pooing things like the social aspect. Am I living in some kind of alternate reality bubble here? I don't even want a PS4 for myself and I think the extendability of the PS4 for social interaction is kind of cool. And people are still pulling out that tired "let me play games on my game console," card?

I'm an extremely social person. I just got an iPhone and I'm only now jumping on all the social media bandwagoning like Instagram and using Facebook and twitter where ever I am. I think building that stuff in standard is a good way to prod developers into making interesting social gaming. Burnout's social wall is a nice example. I don't want to jump onto Facebook and talk about my game. I think I'd much rather see where a game can take me without me jumping onto twitter to start a conversation.

Oh, but the most priceless thing to me are the rumors, nay, predictions that the Playstation Network will be moving to a subscription-based model on the PS4.

Really, I only have one thing to say to the people crying bloody murder about this tidbit.

"Welcome to my world dipshits."

Course, you can jump onto PC gaming and whatever. I'm not some kind of sheeple, mindlessly consuming what's given to me. I'm a savvy consumer who pays attention to what's going on. But realistically, most of my friends are playing on a particular service anyways and I find it inconvenient to start a gaming capable PC rig. So goodie. Now you'll either play on an equal playing field with us Xbox people or will just start a mass exodus. No skin off my nose.

All this negativity is really harshing my mellow bros. What happened to just enjoying the games you had and enjoying the games you were looking forward to? Ok, so there's a lot of controversy surrounding the development of Aliens: Colonial Marines (or the lack thereof) but back in the day, if you didn't like something, you didn't do shit with it. I guess in today's technology, you're voice is magnified and you can't help but voice your extremely loud opinion.

It's not like I need to worry about next gen anyways though. I only bought my 3DS XL comparatively recently, so I feel fulfilled enough on the new games front. I mean, New Leaf's been confirmed to be a June release after all.

Money sure seems to be in short supply nowadays though. I'm looking at my future bill which takes into account for my family's new iPhones and I have no idea how it arrived at over $400. I know partial bills from the previous months are accounted for but $400? Not to mention a speeding ticket I need to pay off, shrinking hours at work, and I didn't get that lead promotion. It's all really frustrating, thinking the world is against me when all I really want is a steady career I can use to move out and live with my girlfriend. At the same time, getting rejected for a promotion is pretty galvanizing to expanding my career search in the Disney company and look for something media oriented. A co-workered turned me on to the notion of Disney accepting for a position called a media rep, which is basically Disney PR from the sounds of it.

It's pretty hard to talk about anything more when all I've literally been doing is play Fire Emblem Awakening. Yes, I'm still on that shit. And Owain is the shit.

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
