LONG BLOG

Busy week in gaming and game-related stuff for me and everyone I think. Here are some general and personal highlights of the week for me...

Andy put up a new Bloggers Wanted assignment Saturday: "What's it like to game with you?" We already have some entries, so check them out. One even seemed Topsauce-worthy to me, wasn't expecting that but it was really good.

Alice: Otherlands got funded in the nick of time. McGee is buying the movie rights to Alice back and will be making a series of short animated films based on the Otherlands concept. He sees the original game, Madness Returns, and this as sort of a trilogy. The concept/pitch is really good and I think it's possible we'll get a new game out of this eventually, too *crosses fingers*

Legend of Iya's Kickstarter is struggling, though. I hope he manages to get it made even if the Kickstarter fails, I really want this game. Spread the word!

I think an interview with the Planetside 2 director on Eurogamer justified my decision to go with an 8-core AMD CPU in the build I made last Thursday. To port the game, they have to optimize it for the PS4's multicore AMD CPU which he said would benefit PC gamers with AMD CPUs as well. Expect new games to be heavily multithreaded, as it's the only way to get any power out of the slow next-gen console CPUs. On PC, I wouldn't buy a CPU with less than 6 cores at this point

Some news also just leaked about the HD9000 Series of graphics cards from AMD. The flagship HD9970 sounds like the Fister Roboto of graphics cards. Might be sticking with AMD after all.

Speaking of sticky uh I mean sticking I'm really trying hard to stick with games until I complete them. I just finished Strike Suit Zero, a nice space combat title. Now I have to pick something to play next. I have some big titles like Dishonored in my backlog, but I think my next goal will be finishing these games:

Shadowrun Returns
Yes, there will be crazy modding soon, but for now the main campaign is pretty straightforward from what I can tell. Also, elves with collars and neon gas masks? Sign me up! (ps: thank you, Phil!)

Remember Me
Enjoyed the first part before I got distracted. Really want to finish this one.

Skullgirls
It's finally coming out on PC! If you preorder you can play the beta now, I think. Is it sad that I'm super-excited to collect all the trading cards for this? The only bad thing is that you never truly "beat" a fighting game? Anyway, dibs on Parasoul!

Misery Mod 2.0 for Stalker: Call of Pripyat
This mod looks incredible, and flat-out brutal. Might wait until I upgrade my GPU, actually, as it sounds really demanding.

What are you guys planning to play next? And how are you doing at the whole "actually finishing games you start" thing?

And here are you recaps!

* - Gaming With Charlie and Brett - As much origin story as anything, this is a pretty personal and well-written blog about the positive effect games had on Charlie's life.

P - Geek Week Video - VVVGamer's has a couple new video podcasts, focused on the GT Academy competition and racing games complete with some good interviews.

M - Gaming With Crackedbat - Hmmmm I think this blog might be satirical. Nahhhh.

M - Gaming With Troy - TroyFullbuster describes what it's like to game with a perfectionist who doesn't like to lose and is totally hardcore at games like Halo, Mario Party, and Candy Crush. I made one of those up.

M - Gaming With BigBoss0110 - Another Bloggers Wanted response, this time from a guy who seems very much a mix of gaming styles and attitudes - in a good way.

M - Gaming With Alphadeus - Alpha sounds like a fun guy to game with. Positive attitude focused on fun, this I like.

S - The Shattered - Cinderquill tells us why Podtoid's fan community is teh awesome.

T - Politics and Games - Spieler Dad discusses Glorious Mission, a military FPS developed by the Chinese government.

V - Call of Juarez: Gunslinger - General Mills' Plus 10 does a "let's play" sort of video featuring this CoJ title.

Elitist Geek Decor: framed System Shock 2 insert/disc

L - Dudes in Distress - Frank makes a video that is satirizing Tropes vs Women, male gamers' reactions to it, or something. I think it is supposed to be funny so here it is. I hate everything today so my sense of humor is suspect.

It's been a brutal week for me personally. But gaming and my Dtoid time keep me (mostly) sane. You guys rule. And, um, sorry for using a bajillion images...

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
