LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 3-02-09 and Qalamarisms

Greetings, fellow automatons.

In the background tonight, I have a torrent of Jonathan Coulton Looks Back percolating away. He's probably best known in these parts for writing the closing credits song for Portal, but he's done many fairly geeky songs that statistically, if you're reading this, you will enjoy. He's well versed in gaming and internet social trends, having released a couple of his songs as free downloads for Rock Band-- and everyone who's met him at PAX or other events has said he's just as awesome in real life as you would expect. The album is a legal torrent, all of the songs distributable under Creative Commons, and can be grabbed right here if you are so inclined. It won't cost you anything except time, why not have a listen?

Seeing this live was one of the highlights of my life. No exaggeration.

I traded my copy of Bioshock for a friend's copy of Fallout 3 for a while and have just started that up. I expect to be exploring the D.C. Wasteland for quite a while. The first two Fallout games reminded me of Choose-your-own-adventure books, and each save was like putting your thumb on a page to see what would happen next. I hope this one continues that tradition.

Lots of reviews today, but not much news. Let's get to the recaps.

*-There are some exceptionally talented artists here on Destructoid. GrumpyTurtle is one of them.
*-"I think it's fitting that I share my name with some mustachioed cowboy gay porn bear." -Jim Sterling

A-StrawHatLuffy writes about the ups and downs of emulation.
S-Every Monday NihonTiger90 politely asks What'd You Get?
M-The first Musing for this month is from Unangbangkay, who wrote about the Star Wars universe.
M-MotoRobo wrote about bibles for his Monthly Musing. I can almost guarantee it's not what you're expecting.

C-PacoDG posted some cool Cosplay pictures taken at Megacon, and is giving away some of the stuff he bought.

E- Love Dtoid? Live in Texas? Check this out.
F-Apparently Killzone 2's first FNF was a lot of fun. Clance can't wait for this Friday.
S-Coonskin shares some IRC hilarity. WTF is a hedgehog?
I-UCHU briefly introduces him-or-herself. Oh, wait, no, it's a him.
I-Uber Mashu makes a fine introduction and lets us know what it's really like to work in a U.K. GameStation store.
I-Mighty Pinto wrote a truncated "10 things" post. That's ok, his 8 things are all pretty sweet.
E-Falinter is promoting a XBox version Left 4 Dead tournament.

T-Nilcam ponders the dickery surrounding SF4 ranked matches. The internet is a magical place, isn't it?
R-SephirothX reviews Killzone 2's multiplayer portion.
R-CWal37 played the PC demo for Lost Remnant on Steam, and shares his impressions.
T-Shinryu108 got a new HDTV and a PS3 for Street Fighter 4. After, his head asplode.
T-Perfect Chaos wanted to know what DS game to try after Time Hollow.
R-Hot Cyder's review of Chrono Trigger endorses bank robbery if you can't afford it. In these troubled economic times, I suppose that's valid.
T-Speaking of Chrono trigger, have you heard about the upcoming Black Sigil? If not, do yourself a favor and check out Jackal27's blog.
R-Lots of reviews today, half retro, half modern. Stewie32887 reviews the original Castlevania. Qraze gets cranky.
R- Barcode reviewed Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
V- TheCleaningGuy reports that King of Fighters 12 will be coming to consoles later this year. It's a good year for fighting games.

S-Pendleton21 has been disgusted with Gillette ever since he saw today's Penny Arcade. Niero agrees.
F-InfiniteStrike posted some casting choices for Street Fighter 4: the Movie. I think Reggie would make a better Ryu.
L-Michiyoyoshiku reviewed some comics.
S-SurplusGamer has a friend who's leaving to serve their country. Before she left, she gave him a very nice going away present.
S-VGMari picked up some Japanese Gameboy games and BSG patches at Megacon. Nice haul!

L-Gregatrons shares a couple of game-related pieces from The Onion. Nice header image, by the way.
R-This was the first post I looked at today. No mention of Hades and Persephone? You could tie it in with God of War or something.
V-Parrothead shares a music video called "Guitar Hero Hero" by MC Lars. There's a wicked guitar solo about halfway through, oddly enough.
?-Bwuh? No comprendo.

F-Forums, please.
F-Preview blogs don't fly on my watch. Post actual content the first time or don't post at all.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment

Overcoming Fear

We’ve all been there. A game presents us with a moment or situation that fills us with dread. It could be the inexorable approach of a supernatural menace or looking down from the top of an impossibly tall building. Games will play on your fears and push you. But how do you overcome and prevail?

In honor of the ween of hallow and the month of October, the Bloggers Wanted prompt is all about “overcoming your fears in video games.” How did you face the digital demons and pixel poltergeists? Did climbing in Assassin’s Creed make you feel dizzy? Or do underground levels make you feel like you can’t breathe? Everyone has this moment in gaming. You can scoff at the mirror room in Silent Hill 3 but break out into a cold sweat if you see a clown. So what do you do to get past this? Have any tricks of the trade or anecdotes that you’ve picked up along the way? We want to hear about it.

Take us to your moment and how you dealt with that fear. Let us see into your heart and reach out to touch the quiet truth of your words. All you have to do is write your story in the Cblogs and format the title as “Overcoming Fear: [your blog title here].” It's delightfully easy. You may even find your story promoted to the Front Page. That’s always a treat.

You’ve overcome this fear. You have this story, this moment. Why not share it with us? Maybe your story can help someone else overcome their fear.
