LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 2-9-09 and Qalamarisms

I don't normally use my power of recapping for evil, but I hope you'll all permit me this extravagance for a change. I've been mulling it over and have been thinking that starting an online Destructoid Pokemon tournament might be a lot of fun. I think it'd also be a lot of work though, so right now I'm just putting feelers out to see if there's enough interest to make it worth doing. If you're interested, would you kindly check out my cblog or the forum post and let me know? I think having 32-64 players participating would be the most fun, but I'm willing to go with as few as 16.

I went and saw Taken with some friends over the weekend, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a bit slow to get started, but once it gets going it doesn't let up until the ride is over. One of my friends exhaled mightily when the end credits began to roll, exclaiming, "I don't know about you guys, but I'm exhausted." It's THAT kind of a movie. No superpowers, no fancy gimmicks. Just 90 minutes of Liam Neeson kicking nine types of excrement out of some dudes who really, really deserve it.

Anyway. Enough whoring for now. Let's get down to the recaps.

*-This is where I abuse my power. At least I'm up front about it, right? I'll go hang my head in shame now.
*-Megastryke's Monthly Musing on long car trips slammed me right square in the nostalgia gland. Nice one!
*-InfiniteStrike touched off a debate about the racial elements of RE5. I like to see intelligent discussion taking place in the Cblogs.

A-Rucksack continued the RE5 debate in his own blog.
A-SurplusGamer looks at Subjective vs. Objective, and why the latter should NOT be a reviewer's goal.
S- An early Happy Birthday to NihonTiger90. He got some early B-day presents, but What'd You Get?
A-Subenu wrote a solid piece on the definition of "Retro." Personally, I think it's subjective.
S-Tactix hosted Destructoid Community Discusses. This week: Games that suck.

No contests today. Instead please enjoy this orchestrated version of Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy 3/6j.

E-Senisan82 shows some pictures of the Dtoid Karaoke night that followed the New York Comic Con.
E-Dtoid Toronto will be representing at Lanapalooza.
S-Ironically, this probably belongs in the forums. MrSadistic's E-peen casts Meteo!
I-Welcome to RetroNutZ, who shares a bitchin' retro-themed wallpaper as his way of introducing himself.
I-Greetings are also in order for EskimoBob, who may have the best header image on Destructoid right now.
H-Finally, n0brein makes an introduction by showing off his slick gaming setup.

N-Dead Rising 2 was inevitable, but I'm still going to be giggling maniacally while taking out zombies with a Baccarat board.
N-FlamesofChaos found an excellent reason to buy Retro Game Challenge, assuming you weren't going to already.
N-NihonTiger90 found that rumors of Kizuna's death may have been greatly exaggerated.
N-Yesterdays Rumortoid about the new Splatterhouse being pulled from Bottlerocket has been confirmed by FuryFire.
T- Oberoi wrote about some games he thinks deserve sequels. What would you add to the list?
R-Dyna Geek reviewed Lord of the Rings: Conquest.
T- Covah points out that this Fall in February is a good time to be a console gamer.
R-DerrickH is none too pleased with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.
R- VoyToid reviewed Swordy McBoob in Monsterland.
R-Diverse reviewed My World, My Way. It's... pink. Could be interesting though-- after all, it's from ATLUS.
T-Gregatrons tries to compare apples and oranges and winds up with lemons.
T-Novakaine found a quote comparing the Wii to a Teddy Ruxpin. Theodore Ruxpin Esq. if you're nasty.
T-Bugsport has a recommendation for those who just can't seem to finish an RPG.

F-Gregatrons pours out a virtual 40 on the curb for Toonami.
F-Coraline made Former Acorn uneasy. Neil Gaiman'll do that, yup.
L-Matthew Blake wanted to know about self-publishing.
F-BlindSideDork thinks the movie 9 shares some thematic elements with Half-Life.
S-Barcode found a couple of friends in the closet. Wait, that came out wrong.
S-Zoel shows off the most expensive single game I've ever seen.
S-WhoAmI40 may have gotten the deal of the year when he traded in COD: WaW for this retro treasure trove.

L-This is WAAAY funnier than it has any right to be.
R-Some random mental activity from Garison. I get that way on Sunday nights too sometimes.
L-Oh dear. Sony takes one on the chin from The Onion. Nice find by Crunshii.
V-WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS?!? WHYYYYY?!!!?
C-We spell out "You," "Your" and "You're" around here.
C-I understand the need to vent, but I don't think this is really the forum to do so.
?-Wait... you're saying pro wrestling isn't real?
C-Xhumation wrote a bit about Mario and Peach's relationship. Kinda hard to read with the jacked up line breaks.

F-Sometimes the comments make a fail blog worth looking at.
F-A preview of a review? Not on my watch.
F-Gave this guy the benefit of the doubt on his other crappy blog, but this one's worse.

Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
