LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 2/17/09 + Pendeltonisms

So, last week, I talked about my friend making a badass Bowser glass piece. That same friend has asked me into the studio tonight to help him out with his next project: the 3 main characters of AAAAH! Real Monsters. Holy shit am I excited! Also, this week, our school has had an old-world (read: Italian born-and-raised) glass "maestro" come in and make glass while people observes. The guy's name is Elio Quarisa, and he makes some of the most beautiful pieces I've ever seen. Check this out:

Yeah, he's been in the shop all week, making stuff like this, and, for some reason, humming "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" all the time. I fucking love this dude.

Speaking of old guys, today's blog contains some old dude's birthday, on top of other things, like the first ever Fail and Top blog by the same user in the same day, and lost of The Lost and The Damned talk.

Cblog Recaps: Ba da bum ba ba, I'm loving it!

*-OH FUCK YES! Over 100 of us fine folks are in the Google Group for PAX 09. WE’RE GONNA TAKE OVER SEATTLE!!!

*-A great look at what I think is the most terrifying segment of gaming ever invented: bullet hells.

*Umm…wow, hell of a way to come out the gate: Welcome Mighty Pinto as he talks about R-type: Dimensions

*-Pretty fantastic round-up of The Lost and The Damned, considering his fail earlier in the day.

*-When is Dtoid just gonna get its own art gallery: Vice shows off some gorgeous Castlevania X and Cave Story art.

A-Crunshii examines the need for game companies to look into dropping game prices back down, what with the Economy in such bad shape.

A-BFeld13 gives us his thoughts on GTA DLC through a children’s storybook-style delivery.

P-FAILCAST recorded tonight. And, apparently, it’s magical and unexplainable.

FUCK YES! Though my guitar broke (=[), I was happy I was finally able to play this on Rock Band today:

S-Wow, Kyvon08 found the only instance of a Gamestop employee who isn’t an inconsiderate moron.

S-Wow, Brilliam IS awesome! Also, fucking rocking dog, Zen!

I-Welcome professional weeaboo to the cblogs, then run away in terror.

B-Some old guy (y0j1mb0) talks about how some other old guy (SantanaClause89) got older today. Those ancient fuckers.

N-Since I know not the loving touch of PC gaming, this means little to me, but probably excites some of you: the Source mod Black Mesa is gonna be out by the end of the year.

V-Mega64 spoofing Elite Beat Agents. Like the costumes and dancing, but the music makes me want to shove a flaming screwdriver in my ear.

R-A pretty cool text-and-video review of the new SF4 Fightpad.

R-COD4 review, with some Dtoiders showing their teeth in the comments. Good read, though.

T-Aparently Demios likes GTA: TLaTD. How do I know? Oh, probably the line “THIS IS HOW THE DLC CONCEPT WORKS BITCHES!”

T-A look at Daemon Bride, which, while gorgeous, is apparently for pussies.

D-This is pretty neat: GamingGoddess shows off some sprites she made for a game she’s working on.

A-Art of Isarar, Maximilian, and Selvaria in the new Valkyria anime. Also, I find out what the fuck Char Aznable means.

A-Aertyr is on the path to failing maths whilst he draws SF4 and Dtoid doodles.

?-Neat little find: F.E.A.R. 2 has some Office Space Easter eggs.

?-I don’t care what he says: Gibbo is the father of that crazy British whore who slept with a 12-year-old.

?-Mix this with Gentleman Dinosaur, and you’ve got the makings of the greatest, classiest, Anti-Semitiest game ever.

F-...are you serious, dude? Do your own work.

F-I don’t understand why you didn’t direct this to the forums…

F-What, pray tell, was the point of this shortblog?

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
First Kiss

No matter what the experience was or which game or genre left that strong first impression, such experiences have the potential to open our eyes to the rich history of a series or genre. With any luck, we might find even more to love or something better. A great first experience with RPGs could lead to an undying love affair.

Sometimes a first kiss can be so impactful that the game gets placed on a pedestal and enshrined as a gold standard, which has its own pros and cons. I mean, it is nice to have a basis for comparison, but some folks take it too far. There are people who loved Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy VII so much that nothing after them really got a fair shake.

So first impressions matter -- they can shape and inform our gaming habits. I grew up on arcades, Nintendo, handhelds, and eventually into RPGs, so much of what I play will be influenced by how I acquired my tastes. I probably like Overwatch a ton because it has a passion for RPG roles, but contextualizes them closer to older shooters focused on objectives more than gear builds and grinding out perks for better killstreaks.

So for this month's Bloggers Wanted, we'd like you head over to the community blogs write about your first kiss, the games that positively influenced you or maybe biased you a little too much for a time. What turned you on to a series or genre? Was it love at first sight? Did it set any expectations in stone or possibly lead you to something better?

Whatever the case might be, remember to use the title "First kiss" and place "Bloggers Wanted" in the tags!
