LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 11/07/13 + Shadeisms

   0

Well, we certainly had another exciting day today in the Cblogs, didn’t we?

Much like Andy Dixon’s blog a few weeks ago, a lot of great things were said in Char’s blog today, and especially in the comments. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that seeing Dale, Jordan, Chris and everyone else get into the community to tell us that everything’s going to be alright gave us a much-needed boost in confidence. Me, I’m already curious to see what they’ve got planned for us next week, the little teases. (Oh, and in the mean time congrats to Chris for the promotion!)
At any rate, reading all of what they had to say made more confident in Destructoid’s future than I’ve been in a long time. We’re going to make it through this and we’re doing it together if I have to drag you buttholes kicking and screaming.

...Which makes it kind of ironic that I won’t be having much time for it at all. Now please don’t take this as some sort of major announcement or whatever, but I am going to cut back on my Recaps time a little, and if the procrastination demon doesn’t get the best of me Dtoid as a whole. All of the schoolwork I have to do simply doesn’t allow me to spend too much time on the internet anymore as much as I’d like to. As much as I like doing the caps, every hour spent on these –isms is an hour I could’ve spent finishing that chapter on EU competition law.

Again, and I can’t stress this enough, this is by no means a resignation of any sort. Hell, Destructoid is one of the few things keeping me sane right now, so I’ll be damned if I’ll give any of this up. That's just the effect you guys have on me, I guess. Just don’t expect any in-depth Shadeisms from me for at least a couple of weeks or any witty pictures grasped from the depths of the internet. Dunno, does anyone expect that from me? Probably not. What you should expect is me to come back swinging once everything is done and dusted. It will happen. Until that time, these –isms will probably consist of a few random paragraphs tops, and on the off chance that I’ve had time to play video games a word or two on that.

Either way, I’m going to call it a day now and let the blogs speak for themselves. I swear to god that chapter is getting done today.

Oh, wait. ONE FINAL THING: As I post this it is Friday the 8th of November, which means that today is the last day you can enter my contest! Do you want to win The Typing of the Dead, Dark Souls, The Binding of Isaac, Pathologic and Trine? Then get your fat behind over there and enter! The winner is going to be selected tomorrow as early as I can be bothered, so don’t miss it!

* - If there was ever a blog I'd topsauce for the comments alone, this would be it. The comments here are wonderful and reassuring. A big thanks to everyone who voiced their thoughts here, especially to the staff. And a big thanks to Char for voicing his concerns with the site in a reasonable way.

* - And here's the follow-up, with even more wonderful comments. Gratz again Chris (I feel like such a newbie for not remembering you as Magnalon)

A - Valve has been going on the offensive lately. Will it work though?

A - Brings a tear to my eye: UsurpMyProse breaks up with his trusty 360. I hope they find love again.

A - Every once in a while you just come across a game that singlehandedly makes you remember why you are a gamer in the first place. JoyfulSanity just had one of those moments with Pokémon X.

A - I love blogs about how someone became a gamer. This is Agidyne's!

A - Gearbox has been doing some things spectacularly wrong if you ask GlowBear.

A - Grethiwha gives a quick update on what Jim Sterling is going to be up to in the future, and gives him a proper farewell. Because he deserves it.

C - OpiumHerz won the Blizzcon virtual ticket but doesn't have time to go. Enter his contest, and maybe you'll get to go instead. Also, make sure to check this blog out at least once. Trust me.

I - I've seen you around on the forums, welcome to our turf!

V - A video on teh graphix.

T - Come now, everyone knows Mario is secretly the bad guy. Why else did you think Luigi was afraid of everything? Trauma, I tell you.

? - I have no time to try to comprehend this. So here you go, you try.

V - Pee Wee's Playhouse meets Ninja Gaiden, because why not?

L - Now it's just a matter of time before someone photoshops Mr. Destructoid giving someone a blowjob.

F - Too soon man, too soon.

May you always find water and shade

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
