LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 06/29/13 + Jinxisms

Was a stressful week on Destructoid, at least it felt that way to me. Lots of debating about games, gender, journalistic integrity, etc. Not that those things aren't important, but sometimes I think we all need to spend more time playing games and a little less arguing about them!

Still, I've found time for some fun. Poker Night 2 was on sale, so I picked it up. I suck at Poker, but I wanted it mostly for the lol's since I love all the characters in it. Would love to see Moxxi as a player in the next one. Oh, the innuendos.

And there's no real evidence for it, but I like to pretend your silent character is Gordon Freeman. Hey, it's possible!

A lot of people are discussing which console they're going to get this November, and whether it even matters. I'm having similar thoughts. Just not about consoles...

The 760 is getting rave reviews everywhere, I guess for $260 it's a pretty smashing card. I'm going to hold out for a 3GB version, though, and maybe a drop to $200ish. My HD6870 still kicks enough ass that I can bide my time...

Oh oh oh oh... in case you missed the news, the new Mortal Kombat Komplete is finally coming out on PC Tuesday. It's only $30 and you can snag an extra 25% off on GMG with the voucher "GMG25-BAWQB-8UQWG". I barely play fighting games, but for like $23 I couldn't say no. Hence the backlog from hell. Or heaven. First world gamer problems, eh?

Okay, enough of my -ismz. May I present your lovely Saturday recaps, which include some tasty sauce and good reviews.

* - Pixielated's shares a sauce-worthy gaming story about the joy of the Gaming Multiverse.
* - The Last of Us & Storytelling in Games - Mlsa delivers a smart analysis of how storytelling works in games, using The Last of Us as an example.

A - Worldbuilding & Morrowind - Shuuda discusses worldbuilding in videogames, using Morrowind as a great example.
P - Scary Granules Episode 14 - SG and crew talk about Rezzed, a newer gaming convention.

E - Weekend Warriors -  Smurfee invites everyone to share what they're playing this weekend so they can get together with others. (um yeah recap not too timely heh)

T - Console Gaming - Sidd4friends contemplates the future of console gaming in light of competition from other platforms
T - The Last of Us - Mlsa asks whether games really need to be "fun"
R - Disgaea 2 - Troy gives us a review of the PSP version of this classic RPG.
R - The Last of Us - Mlsa has been busy today, eh? Good review of The Last of Us.
R - Company of Heroes 2 - GreaterThanGaming didn't like COH2 so much. Very detailed review, with good reasons for the criticism.
T - YouTube & Games - Spyonan asks why so many game commentators on YouTube have trouble succeeding..
T - Next Gen - Spieler Dad says next-gen will be great no matter what console you choose, so stop it with the fanboyism!

C - PS1 games: Bleem > PS3? - PopetheRev ponders why PS1 games look better on the Bleem emulator than on the PS3.
C - Ellie vs Ellen - Issaac tries to debunk the idea that The Last of Us' Ellie is based on Ellen Page, with mixed results.

I can't remember where I saw this (lol my bad if it was here - double fail!), but it certainly counts as fail. Hmmm, I wonder if this is what happened to Phil...

Anyway, screw stress and anything that isn't fun. I'm going to chill out and play some FEZ, and nobody's gonna stop me!

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
