LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 06/11/14 and 06/12/14 + Shadeisms

   0

No points for guessing what this week's Shadeisms are going to be about. E3 is an event no gamer can resist. Whether you're in the Xbox crowd, a PS4 gamer or a Nintendo fanboy, there truly is something for everyone. Of course, by now I shouldn't have to tell you which of these categories I belong to.

If you ask me, Nintendo did a pretty stellar job this year. We got a few solid announcements although some of them might be a ways off, but most of all we got some great new info on games that we may have already known were coming but look about 10 times better now that we know more.

Hyrule Warriors featuring a playable Zelda and Midna? Fuck yes. Midna looks especially cool, being able to summon Wolf Link and smashing shit up with her hair-arm thing.

Speaking of smashing shit up, how's about that Super Smash Bros., guys? It's starting to look mighty fine if you ask me, and this week's announcements only made that all the better. Playable Miis don't do very much for me but are pretty cool nonetheless, Pac-man makes a stellar third-party addition, and Palutena was easily my favorite character from Kid Icarus Uprising. I'm very happy that she made it in.

Retail copies of Bayonetta 2 including the original? Oh fucking hell yes. I've been itching to play the original Bayonetta for ages now, and even considered buying a used PS3 just to play that game, but fortunately Nintendo and Platinum have answered my prayers in the best way possible.

The upcoming Zelda being Open-World and looking absolutely gorgeous? Sign me up!

Then there's all the stuff that's a little more on the sidelines for me. Yoshi's Woolly World being basically Kirby's Epic Yarn except even more adorable, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse having an excellent claymation artstyle, Captain Toad getting his own neat little puzzle game, Splatoon looking hella fun, I'm down with all of it. These didn't exactly blow me away, but they look fun enough to spend some quality time with later this year.

And last but not least, Xenoblade Chronicles X just being Xenoblade Chronicles X? I can't even begin to tell you how hyped that game has me.

It's weeks like these when I remember why I became a Nintendo fanboy in the first place. Shit be amazing.

* - It takes a lot of effort to become Elsa's friend. Step 1: no lesbian porn before the second date.

* - Yep, video games are pretty amazing, everyone. Seymour found some great things to be amazed by this week. Didn't we all?

* - CaimDark writes a great blog on diversity in video games and rape culture. I know the latter has become kind of a dirty word nowadays, but do give this blog a read. It's nuanced enough and gives a good indication of what the actual problems are.

* - You too can pretend to go to E3 with Captainbus' Choose Your Own Adventure blog. Quote Shakespeare, do street magic, the choices are endless!

A - k8y has an interview with the developers of Crypt of the Necrodancer, the upcoming roguelike/rhythm game.

A - VVVGamer recaps the big E3 conferences and comes to the conclusion that they were all pretty great this year!

A - You tell'em, girlfriend!

A - PixelFiend was impressed by Nintendo's showing this week, and I find it hard to blame him!

A - Not a platformer this time, Ocelot89 looks at a level from Star Fox instead; Corneria from the SNES game.

R - ALL95 reviews Entwined for PSN, which is apparently really good!

T - A self-proclaimed optimist just can't see the good in Enemy Front.

T - Troyfullbuster got his grubby hands on early demos of Smash Bros. for both WiiU and 3DS. It's sounds really great!

R - A Comiccon review for How to Survive.

M - You can play video game music on floppy drives. Yes, floppy DRIVES.

? - Must be a forum thing, because I have no idea.

C - I refuse to failtoid anyone for unpopular opinions, but I honestly don't understand much of Terry's problems with the upcoming Smash Bros.

V - A day in the life of a DayZ player.

C - Instead of just hoping for Dragon's Dogma 2, why don't you tell us why you liked the first one so much?

S - Uhm, we know? Isn't the entire point of E3 week that we get told these things?

S - Again, we know? Why don't you tell us more about your own thoughts on the matter. It's all nice and well that Hyrule Warriors is coming out soon, but what do YOU think of it?

F - Fuck if I know.

- I feel terrible about this, but I just couldn't resist.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
