So, E3. Should've called it Wii3, right? Wii3 U? Right?

I have no idea. I followed pretty much nothing this year. I have a tendency to approach gaming news pretty passively, more of a "I'll hear it when I hear it" kind of thing, but the stuff that has trickled in through the twin filters of laziness and apathy sounds pretty good. A decent showing from Sony, quirky fun from Nintendo, you know how it goes. Reggie Fils-Aime being all whacky and junk. Jack Tretton being uncomfortable. Man, I don't even know.

What I heard about Microsoft's stuff - and I'll be honest here, since there's no way I'll be able to branch out, console-wise, this is where my heart must lie - sounds good. Well, alright, lotta questionable stuff, but here's the thing. Halo 4. Mass Effect 3. The Elder Scrolls V. Bioshock Infinite. These are pretty well all of my favourite big franchises. The only thing preventing me from dissolving into a being of pure joy is the lack of a follow up to Borderlands and maybe a cross-platform steampunk Animal Crossing - you know, to appeal to the kitschy Hot Topic girl in me. But, uh, yeah. I'm more or less full glee over here. Kissing strangers on the street, birds flying around, a real disaster, really.

And that's about that. Uh. Cool. Let's do this whole expo thing again next year, alright?

* - "Casual" gaming is a point of contention. Elsacaps's perpetual place up here, less so.

* - Manasteel88 puts out a solid writeup on Sony. And it ain't awkward baby, it ain't awkward at all.

* - The Wii U: hardcore like a switchblade made of switchblades.

A - BoomingEchoes' comment is, like, the Andr Ren Roussimoff of comments.

A - PlanetPanton reckons Nintendo's Wii U parallels the point in a young man's life where he starts wearing his mom's dresses. You know, figuring things out.

M - Keelut2012 just wants to snuggle up on the couch with a good pal and shoot some people.

S - Meteorscrap drops the apostate bomb. Ah, good word man, good word. Bad experience though and sympathy for that.

R - Gunsage mentions Dark Cloud 2 in his review of 2003's RPGs. Wolfy-Boey is the cheerfully sticky mess in the corner.

R - ManWithNoName wasn't quite mind-taken with the Wii U.

T - KingSigy wants to play him some games.

T - nekobun reacts to E3 (eventually).

R - Red Faction: Pixie Magic.

M - Swinging beat, Crackity Jones. Dig it.

- Bey

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
