LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 05/01/14 + Pink Gold Shade-isms

I think the item on today's agenda should be the Mario Kart 8 Nintendo Direct.
...that was the weirdest fucking thing. It wasn't announced in advance, for one, and I'm not sure what it was like for those who watched the American version, but the EU one was filled with all sorts of skits and different segments all being done in different styles (like a news program and such). It was jarring to say the least, and I for one hope that Nintendo goes back to the straightforward Directs soon. I still have nightmares about those two Miis doing the Item section.

- Clearly he means to kill her, but that won't do much good because she's already dead inside.

The content was much better, with some nice announcements. I'm not too thrilled about Baby Rosalina or Pink Gold (is that even a thing?) Peach, but improved online functionality is always nice. Also, anti-Blue Shell items? OH FUCKING HELL YES.

And of course there's the free game deal! Destructoid reported that you in the US can choose one of four games to get with your early purchase of Mario Kart. To that I can only say "Sucks to be you!", because we Europeans get to choose from TEN games. Included among those are Zelda, Pikmin, Party U and Mario U, just like what you're getting, but also things like Sonic Lost World, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (!) and The Wonderful 101 (!!!). I think we can see who won this round.

To be honest I've never played much Mario Kart. I played some Double Dash at a friend's house, and a tiny amount of Mario Kart Wii, but not much else. In fact, I don't think I've ever actually owned a Mario Kart game. Nonetheless, I've enjoyed what little I played, so it looks like I'm going to be jumping on board with this one. The free game helps. Who knows, maybe we can get some Destructoid tournaments of the ground as a warm-up for Smash Bros later this year. Anti-gravity looks fun, ANTI-BLUE SHELL ITEMS and good old-fashioned mayhem should prove to be plenty to keep me active for a while.

So yeah, looking forward to it! And in the mean time maybe I'll try to get my hands on Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed. I've been meaning to buy that for ages now.

* - At one point or other we've all had this thought: "Man, that would be so awesome to have in real life." RedHeadPeak lists some of his favorites.

* - Another week, another OST Case Study. This week it's Fract OSC's turn, a game which was pretty much made for this blog series.

A - Expensive games may not always be worth the money, but cheap games get you to buy too many of them; the classic Catch-22.

A - This is pretty interesting: what would be a good name for the genre DotA and League of Legends belong to?

C - Zer0t0nin still has some games up for grabs, including the wonderful Thomas Was Alone, Dustforce, LIMBO and Cthulhu Saves the World. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

- Well waddayaknow, turns out pink gold is a thing. And it comes in TIGER.

N - Terry 309 wants to draw attention to a game that's releasing soon: Raven's Cry, an open world pirate game made by the Two Worlds people.

- Nope, I'm still not over this.

V - A video about the games that are coming out this month: It's gonna be a good one!

- I was actually planning on talking about Child of Light and/or Alice today, but I don't have much time and Mario Kart happened. Hopefully next week.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
