Well, PAX Prime ticket sales came and went with all of the suddenness of a flash flood, and unfortunately I did not manage to snag any badges this time. I still kinda want to make the trip to Seattle just to see everyone again, but plans are up in the air at this point. After all, plane tickets are a huge expense for someone living paycheck to paycheck, so I'd like to make sure it would be worth it. I might have to just wait and try again next year...

I didn't play too many games this week, but I did watch a lot of cartoons, since Cartoon Network recently made a deal with Netflix. I grew up watching shows like Dexter's Lab, the Powerpuff Girls, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Ed, Edd n Eddy, and now I can watch them all again whenever I want! I'm glad that they're all still rather entertaining.

The one cartoon that I've been enjoying the most, though, is Samurai Jack. For some reason, I never really cared for it growing up. It's typically very slow-paced, with minimal dialog, so maybe I just thought it was boring. As an adult, though, I'm really loving it! All of the show's influences, such as samurai films, ukiyo-e art, sci-fi films like Star Wars, etc. are all things that I enjoy today, so the show really resonates with me. Genndy Tartakovsky's art style is also quite lovely, and I feel like Samurai Jack is the best example of his work. I'm not sure if I've seen anything past season one, so I hope they add more seasons to Netflix later on. I really want to watch this show in it's entirety!

* - Panzadolphin was impressed by the unusual story and atmosphere of a strange PS2 title called Rule of Rose. I wish more games would take risks like this one did!

* - Shibboleth begins an interesting series on game mechanics, focusing on Portal and Ninja Gaiden for his first post. Some pictures would be nice to break up the intimidating paragraphs, but it's a great read nonetheless!

A - TheDustinThomas expresses his thoughts on violent video games. We don't need less violence, we need more supervision!

A - TheKodu wonders why more developers haven't tried releasing a bundle like Valve did with the Orange Box. It is kind of surprising, seeing as how the Orange Box was quite popular!

A - It's true; if Nintendo ever marketed mobile games, they would most likely sell like crazy! Nintendo probably won't try that anytime soon, though.

S - randombullseye played a bunch of games last month! And apparently his niece and nephew disliked Katamari... that makes me so sad :(

R - Shuuda gives us an overview of Driftmoon.

$ - April 19th UK releases and bargains!

A - A comic about Pandora's Tower and boners.

C - Superior Maximum almost gives us an introduction blog. Go and say hello to him, anyway!

C - Well, it's his first post, so I won't fail it, but... meh.

V - Part 14 of the Nintendo Power Retrospective.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
First Kiss

No matter what the experience was or which game or genre left that strong first impression, such experiences have the potential to open our eyes to the rich history of a series or genre. With any luck, we might find even more to love or something better. A great first experience with RPGs could lead to an undying love affair.

Sometimes a first kiss can be so impactful that the game gets placed on a pedestal and enshrined as a gold standard, which has its own pros and cons. I mean, it is nice to have a basis for comparison, but some folks take it too far. There are people who loved Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy VII so much that nothing after them really got a fair shake.

So first impressions matter -- they can shape and inform our gaming habits. I grew up on arcades, Nintendo, handhelds, and eventually into RPGs, so much of what I play will be influenced by how I acquired my tastes. I probably like Overwatch a ton because it has a passion for RPG roles, but contextualizes them closer to older shooters focused on objectives more than gear builds and grinding out perks for better killstreaks.

So for this month's Bloggers Wanted, we'd like you head over to the community blogs write about your first kiss, the games that positively influenced you or maybe biased you a little too much for a time. What turned you on to a series or genre? Was it love at first sight? Did it set any expectations in stone or possibly lead you to something better?

Whatever the case might be, remember to use the title "First kiss" and place "Bloggers Wanted" in the tags!
