LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 03/08/10 + Sentricisms

   0

Hey all. Today's been something of a busy day for me, between a few work projects, keeping an eye on the Cblogs (a habit I'm not yet as good at as I'd like to be), rushing home to catch the newly-aired episode of House, and trying to wrap this up before heading back to work to afford my roommate an opportunity to pick up Final Fantasy XIII, so I'm finishing this off a little earlier than I might otherwise prefer to.

I sure hope you won't hold it against me.

Lots of great musings today, and plenty of good reads even if they didn't make it into the Topsauce.

Also, I left a little present in honour of Qalamari's traditional methods:

* - Corduroy Turtle's baconsex musing tickled me JUST ENOUGH to squeak into the Topsauce (though pretty dry visually, throw in an image or something, eh?).

* - covah stared at David Hayter's ass perhaps as much as I stared at Old Snake's (it's magnificent). A parenthetical musing, but still awesome.

* - Stevil offers some solid reasoning as to why sexual conquests in gaming are so ephemeral and meaningless.

* - Metallion's "outside looking in" appreciation of RTS and his anticipation for Starcraft 2. (I, too, appreciate RTS, while being a t0al n00b.)

S - NihonTiger90 reappears to fill us in on his recent (and entirely reasonable) haps.

M - Nude mods, topcatyo affirms, are the true litmus of game greatness.

M - Not until Mass Effect 2 did The Craze find a connection worth visiting a virtual, intimate connection.

M - Sex simply not a necessary element in video-games. According to Analogue, it's little more than spam.

P - Guncannon (alongside other community members) shares a new podcast discussing history's representation in video-games.

Tease - Hamza gives away the remainder of the Blur beta codes in one big slew. (Presumably all gone now.)

Tease - Ramalho does the same with two more. (Most definitely gone now.)

E - Funktastic's suave and stylish entry into the PAX East contest.

E - goodgamer77's entry into the PAX East contest. (He's not wearing any pants!)

S - Silverhertz unboxes for us his awesome contest winnings!

C - LoTD addresses some recent comment concerns.

C - SAMA1984 ponders an overabundance of potential riches.

C - I share GoldenGamerXero's concerns with Dtoid's recent brightness.

I - FireFox516's inagural post acquaints us with his contemporary most and least favourites. Welcome!

I - diztrukted doesn't seem to have much to say and his blog's all wonky. Still, first time, so hello!

I - Welcome Tom Davy to the fold! His blog tastes of delightful donkey puns! (Get it?)

R - "OutRun Online Arcade" review, provided by CoruptAl125.

R - Remember Quest 64 (Holy Magic Century)? Let flameconder tell you a thing or two.

R - turdismiller's thoughts on Mass Effect 2.

T - Aon explores a deeper sense of first-person immersion, and its potential.

T - Goggalor sings the praises of the save-game carry provided in Mass Effect 2.

T - Man, The Silent Protagonist waxes loquacious about the full gamut of FF, Xbox, and Sony fandom.

T - Move over MW2, Etahn 8bit has graduated to Bad Company 2. And he has reasons!

T - Cazza's gardually slipping into the hardcore fighting community and invites us all to come with!

T - Now that you're playing BC2, Kuwanjahbee has some tips for ya'.

T - The only reason I didn't put this in the Topsauce is due to some lavish (though not gratuitous) promotion of another site, but SimonSaysDie provides a KILLER read.

T - Daniel Andres walked away from Heavy Rain feeling exceptionally engaged. Cool beans.

T - NoMore gets the Final Fantasy franchise against the ropes. (Spares FFIX!)

T - Cadtalfryn's argument of historical accuracy vs. player agency resonates strongly (not unlike narrative vs. agency).

T - HoodedMiracle thinks fishing blatantly superior in the war of exclusivity. (Look out fish, I just dropped my bagel!)

T - Practically a meme at this point, ChillyBilly also elaborates on his preference of BC2 over MW2.

A - DJDuffy shares a most excellent recent strip from her comic, featuring Mr. Destructoid!

A - A nifty steampunk version of Peach, outlined and coloured by ekoala2002.

F - wanderingpixel has a thing or two to say about last night's Oscars. (Love the Hughes header.)

C - Fitzybear beat out (by 35 minutes) the Destructoid announcement of Steam on Mac, but didn't say too much.

C - Sorry TheRPGist, not really feeling much by way of content here.

F - Unfortunately, randompowerup's link didn't connect us with a video.

F - Apparently Takeshi is a ... dickhead?

Okiday. That about wraps it up for the evening. Hope you've all had a wonderful Monday and I'll see you around.

Cheers,
Sentry

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
