LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 02/07/14 and bbainisms

Not much to talk about this week. I've still been playing both Skies of Arcadia and Risk of Rain. Skies is turning out to be a looooong game (not a bad thing, necessarily). I'm making progress, but very slowly. As for Risk of Rain, I've beaten it several times and unlocked every character, but there's still one achievement that I haven't gotten because I'm terrible with the Sniper. Not that you really have to use the Sniper to get the 5,000 damage achievement, but it seems to be the easiest way. For some reason, I just hate seeing that I only have one achievement left to get in a game... I'm so close!

Also, about the recaps this week: I feel a little bad about the fail section. I really like the idea behind Musicians Wanted, and I'm sure it will lead to some very beautiful things, but it definitely seems to inspire lazy blog writing. For anyone reading this that plans on submitting something for Musicians Wanted: please, PLEASE add a bit of text to your blog to go along with your music. Tell us about yourself! Tell us about the piece you created! What influenced your decision? Why did you choose a particular game/musical style? I guess it's not required to write anything for the topic, but it definitely makes your blog more approachable and interesting, and it will surely get more people to listen to your music.

Anyway, that's all I've got for you today. Keep writing blogs and making sweet music!

S - KD Alpha teaches us how to use the training mode in fighting games, specifically Street Fighter.

A - Ray has some ideas for Nintendo to make a comeback, although I strongly disagree with a few of his suggestions.

A - sonic429 is all about the Wii U!

A - FoolproofAdam lists a few enemies that he thoroughly enjoys fighting. Personally, I find enemies that explode when you kill them to be quite satisfying!

A - Another blog offering advice for Nintendo to save itself, this time using the tactics of a pimp.

F - Friday Night Fights on Playstation + Time traveling!

V - Oculin plays Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

$ - February 7th UK releases and bargains!

F - SpielerDad wonders why Superman suddenly becomes so clumsy while disguised as Clark Kent.

R - Some more DeviantArt cosplay from Reinhold Hoffmann. Godot and Kuja are pretty neat!

L - TheKodu created a blog specifically to make puns about InFamous and condoms, and I applaud his efforts!

F - Gonna have to fail this one. Give us a little more to go off of. For example: What made you decide to remix this song?

F - This one is literally just a link... Tell us about yourself and your project!

F - This person at least gave us a bit of info, however... I can't figure out what the song has to do with gaming at all. I suspect they're just promoting their band with a random song?

Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
