LONG BLOG

Cblogs of 01/11/12 and Mangasms

So it's time for these things again already? Man, fuck my life; it's going by way too quickly.

Anyways, I've been writing a lot lately. Writing, and playing some video games. Guild Wars 2 continues to impress but I'm starting to see the sinister shadow it has cast; the fetch quests really are still fetch quests. You can cleverly disguise them all you want, and they are better than the mindless grind, but you can't hide it from folks like me who know better. Even still it is the most fun I have ever had with an MMO, and the only time I've ever wanted to explore the world of one, apart from Ultima Online.

I got Painkiller Black along with all the expansions during the Halloween sale. I had never played it before, and have to say, it's surprising how solid it is. It's like Serious Sam, but much more playable for folks who have agoraphobia. It's something to play when I get bored of DOOM. Which is never.

Speaking of Halloween, I watched Evil Dead, Trick 'r Treat, and The Blair Witch Project this year. The Evil Dead remake is looking disgusting, and so is the original. People seem to remember it as a comedy, but it definitely wasn't meant to be. Trick 'r Treat is a ridiculously overlooked 2009 release that never made it into theaters, but I consider it a horror classic. It's in the same vein as films like Creepshow and The Twilight Zone; several different stories, only in this case, they all wrap up somewhat neatly and tie into one another in the end. And despite what negative things people have to say, Blair Witch remains one of the creepiest movies I have ever seen. The characters and everything they are going through is just so fucking genuine, it really adds to the entire experience. What our minds concoct in place of directly seeing something is usually far more terrifying, and the film is a master of that very concept.

But Halloween is over, November is here, and I have to get my ass to work in an hour. So let's get this thing over with, shall we?

* - A pretty sweet look at Half-Life in general, and the new Black Mesa mod that attempts to recreate it. I remember being totally hooked to the game when it came out. I didn't even do my homework or nothin'! That's what made me the man I am today...broke, depressed, alone.

* - A complete masochist plays his way through every Ratchet and Clank game ever. Are you sick of that awesome sound effect that plays while picking up bolts? I'll bet you aren't.

* - An even bigger masochist plays through the most dissapointing series of games ever made. But at least there are a few gems in there. I am sorry you had to sacrifice your sanity...or at least mine for reading about the guy who played through every goddamn Sonic game.

A - Memories of MGS2, which despite popular belief, was a pretty fantastic game. And have a little faith in Raiden, folks; that new game he is in might not be too bad after all.

A - EA Pidgeon shares some random thoughts! There is something be said for the occasional brain-dump. I always find these thoroughly entertaining.

F - It's Friday Night, and time to Fight!

T - This is a guide for people who haven't figured out what DLC is all about, or how to be gouged like complete suckers by it.

D - A surprisingly fresh blog about the direction of franchises. Waiting for Part 2 to wrap things up; it's a little hard to follow, and there are very few opinions actually offered on the situation, but a lot strings connecting eachother.

P - Some early, brief impressions of Assassin Guy 3. Give us a review when you're done!

P - A look at the Wii U, and the brilliant looking new Rayman for it. I have high hopes for this one.

L - A pretty funny blog I found difficult to classify. Pokemon are not scary, and this blog determines exactly why. OoooOOoOoOooOOOoo

C - The biggest problem with this blog is the title...it should be Less is Best. LESS IS BEST, DAMMIT. It kind of jumps around a bit, is a bit too brief for it's own good. Sitll, good points in there.

R - A cute little story of morality and Game. I always listen to the bad guy on my shoulder. And it has done nothing good for me, ever.

R - Black was a good game when it was released twenty three years ago. DavoTron tells us he likes it...and that's pretty much it! Like a movie running out of money, this blog felt like it ended in the middle somewhere.

S - I can absolutely guarantee that nobody gives a fuck.

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
