LONG BLOG

CBlogs o' 8/12/13 + MacMangasms: Up Since 3am Birthday Edition

   0

Holy fuck. I have been up a long time. I swear, every time I've had to take someone to the airport since starting here, I've had to get up at the witching hour to take someone to the airport. This time, I've been up since three. In just a few hours, it'll be my birthday. So for this edition, I'm gonna chat with you guys about birthdays and games.

Many moons ago I woke up as a young lad to unwrap a large box. Within that box was a Super Nintendo bundles with Yoshi's Island. Needless to say, I was the most hype little kid since that one child in the YouTube video where he goes ape shit over an N64.

Since then, many of the birthday requests of my youth were game oriented. I received such gems such as Croc 2 for the Playstation to one of the worst games of all time ever: Superman 64.  I remember playing Spiderman on the Gamecube with my new Wavebird controller. That thing is still pretty great, in my opinion.

Since I was so young when I started gaming, birthdays and Christmas were the main times where I received a new game or two. I would wait in anticipation for weeks to play games like Banjo Twooie (or however the hell you spell that) and Timesplitters 2. They were always a special time where I received many games that still play today.

Now I'm in my 20's and preparing to go to grad school and won't be receiving any games. Though I'll always have those nice memories of being a kid unwrapping some cool new games.

Though I do have a new laptop on the way so I can finally play Civ V.

* - Timmy discovers Phantasy Star in this marvelously done blog.

* - Elsa relates her current encounters with death's looming shadow like we see in video games. We're here for you.

S - Andy offers a fine start to a promising series on gaming's great battles. If this were E3 you'd use 'epic' at least thirty times when describing this one.

A - Songy gives some thoughts on Extra Credits

A - Troy-ee dishes on why he doesn't think the Wii U needs a price drop.

E - Another fine edition of Communitoid.

T - Shuuda-ee gives us the rundown on this cool little game.

A - Never be afriad to blog drunk. Since you had the gall, I'm putting you in a category all your own.

L - New Pocketoid, ya'll!

F - The title of this substanceless ad has an appropriate name. Next time write an actual blog to go along with the video.

F - The same lot with the double fail!

I've been up for far too long, but I'm always glad to recap with you lovely people.

Happy Birthday to me.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
