Too. Many. Games.

So this compact and ostentatious "guidebook" entitled 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die exists as a real-deal purchasable physical item, 960 pages long, and I sit all but certain it omits at least several dozen video games I'd deem essential to my gaming pantheon. I could research its full list and cross-reference, yet even in doing that, I'd absentmindedly forget several dozen of those very essentials myself! Why?

I like to savor the games I select. I've mentioned this prior, but I'll reiterate now: it runs contrary to my nature to shortchange any product I've bought unless severe emergency circumstances mandate temperance. I can only imagine the number of hours I've sunk into the 'endless' classics like Pac-Man, Tetris, Breakout, Columns, and Rampage. Then we've got discrete offerings: Mario, Sonic, Contra, Gradius, and such. *Then* online RPGs. Then reg'lar RPGs. Then all sorts of inventive puzzlers, intense fighters, and invincible brawlers. Gaming for all odds & ends, more and more and more and -

Yet, as I scrape along upon the elder side of the pivotal Three-Zero, I indeed find myself adhering to each title I buy 'til I've either vanquished it or banished it. This holds true for quick-burst morsels like Touhou and Sonic *plus* monstrous vortices like Tales of Berseria and Yakuza [any]. I count myself fortunate Dynasty Warriors 8 XL ain't trackin' my playtime, 'cause the height of the hour counter might well unlatch me from this mortal coil. Doesn't that mean I'm missing out on a smorgasbord of superb quality gaming available to me, however? Indeed, it does. I've come to accept that. We live, after all, in an ever-expanding era of...

Making peace with the inevitability of 'missing out' aids my journey through the products I -do- engage. Even were I to cast aside completion and barrel through a handful of offerings each day, the nigh-on 30,000+ quantity and steadily-continual output'd ensure negative progress in terms of tackling the total breadth. So it goes that I settle, and I softly breathe a placid breath away from me, and I keep chippin' away at the lovely gaming creations I *have* chosen to ensorcel me. (Don't get me started on quantity of books. HOO BOY.) My collection may, ultimately, portray a squirrelly skewed slice of gaming's vast array of entertainment. Well, let that be enough. Keep tidy to our own odds & ends.

What about your own, readers? Where do you stop and start as needed, to occupy your own odds & ends? Do you pine to play 'em all or take to solace in the placement you've entrenched? Tell me, and with any sort of favor, that comment section'll load in full someday...

* - Lord Spencer nails the plethora of reasons why both he and I cherished playing Gunstar Heroes so much. Truly, that game should've stood out as a killer app for the Genesis / Mega Drive catalog. Treasure delivered tight running-'n'-gunning, a uniquely diverse moveset, expressive characterization (even for NPCs!), slick graphics, KILLER music, and replayability in spades for such an early-gen product. Hear, hear! To the Gunstar!

P - Just Another Castle #120 drops from the diligent Mango Viking, as ever. Mega Man graces Nintendo again! (Plus all of the other places.) Also, that upcoming Mario cereal looks rad, albeit for those un-dietarily constricted (unlike myself, then).

S - Tone Deaf strikes green with coverage of the original Halo's soundtrack. To me, it seemed telling that even the average on-again/off-again players I knew spoke fondly about Halo's music. Go read ALinkToTheDan's take, as per the blog series standard. One toonie bets Greenhornet214 relished it!

S - Tone Deaf then strikes red, gory red, evaluating the music of Doom 2016. Gotta say...it /rocks/ devilishly, as only Doom should. Heavy stuff, ALinkToTheDan! Mick Gordon's name pops up more commonly these days; I expect goodness to flow from the man's brain for some years to come.

S - Oy! Kerrik! Ya remind me I've gotta play through Fairy Bloom Freesia someday soonish. (Seriously, thanks for that - it had slipped my addled mind. Shame on me.) Anyway, in his series tumbling through space-time, Kerrik52 alights upon this splendid pop-pop action title, wherein fairies pack considerable punch - as well they should, except Cirno, who's a baka and *absolutely* not The Strongest.

S - Ahh, fighters: wish I could excel at 'em. Well...I attain "competence" now and again. Jetfandam has unleashed a heady discussion of their mechanics and gadgetry, focusing here in their third-phase blog on the defensive encampments of anti-air repels and blocking techniques - that is, so to say. In truth, I'm so sorry, Jetfandam: your blog never loads. (Thanks a trillion, DToid.) I try on mobile and on multiple computers. Trying workarounds and back-doors. Trying different viewing modes (Chaos/Social) and setups. Try a ton o' tricks. No go, anywhere. Bites, man. I sincerely apologize for this.
