Cblog Recaps of 11/06/13 + Striderisms!

These caps are late, but for a good reason!

Just kidding! It's Pokemon related!

I spent the better part of my night grinding through Battle Maison to earn points for some precious battle items like the TM for Volt Switch, the Assault Vest, and Choice items like Specs or Band. Because guess what? I'm finally satisfied with my battle stable and team! Let me walk you through a basic run down of my favorite team.

Galvantula
My all important lead. In this case, a suicidelead since his defenses are so frail. But all he needs to do is drop Sticky Web then drop Thunder on everything until he dies. If, however, something comes in that's unreasonable to fight, he uses Volt Switch to keep momentum while switching to something better. Sticky Web is the crux of my team here since the speed drop helps my bulky Pokemon outspeed their adversaries.

Bisharp
The Pokemon that came to mind when I created a Sticky Web focused team was Bisharp. This guy throws the strongest Sucker Punches possible but is as slow as a run down truck. Even with Web support, he'll get outspeeded by the faster things but nothing will like taking a 160 ATK Sucker Punch regardless. Plus, steel/dark is surprisingly good for switching in on resistances.

Blastoise
The mega on my team. Bulky as hell after mega evolution and extremely threatening with Hydro Pump. He's also my spinner for getting rid of spikes and rocks. Ghost wants to come in and spinblock? I hope they like a Mega Launcher boosted Dark Pulse (hint: no they don't).

Togekiss
You thought Bisharp was bad? Here's a reunion with paraflinch Togekiss. Only now, he's not running T-Wave because he already has Web support! Have fun being naturally outspeed by this fat dove as he flinch haxes you with Air Slash. And Togekiss is now Fairy/Flying so he just go straight up buffed. Remember neutral fighting damage thanks to normal/flying? Fairy/flying 4x resists fighting. Have fun dismantling this flying tank.

Klefki
Priority dual screen support baby. Plus priority T-Wave. This little guy is my emergency stop Pokemon when someone's running away with a sweep. Sweepers hate paralysis if you didn't know. Nearly no speed to speak of when paralyzed.

Tyranitar
Here's an interesting thing. TTar has weak Sp.Defense but it doesn't take into account the automatic Sp.Defense boost it gets from starting a sandstorm. It's Sp.Defense gets moderate at that point. Put an Assault Vest on it though and it becomes a ridiculous mixed wall without even trying. Good luck hurting it as it breaks you down with STAB Stone Edge and Crunch.

My Togekiss was crushing a bad Japanese randy the other night. His team was running all ubers: Xerneas, Yvetal, Mega Blaziken, Mewtwo, etc. He rage quit but not before getting humiliated by Klefki and Togekiss tag teaming his poor ubers with the paraflinch combo, not to mention the Web support I mentioned. As soon as I brought his Mewtwo to the red and I decided to get a Wish up with Togekiss, he had enough and I lost my chance for a Vs. Recorder. The best moment still had to be his Xerneas trying to set up a Geomancy only to be stopped cold in its tracks by a flinching Air Slash; priceless. Togekiss was buffed so much with its retconned typing.

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
