It's weird really, me and Bioshock Infinite. I know it's a good game. I've been playing it for maybe 3 hours and I objectively know it's good. The combat is fast and chaotic. It feels strange when I've come to expect Bioshock to be so methodical but it's refreshingly chaotic. The story has me glued. Nothing is as it seems. Words and images are popping up, Booker has a personality and is as mysterious as a blank slate and that sarcastic couple keeps appearing! What is The Lamb? What is the False Shepard? What is the debt?
Infinite has its hooks in me and yet I feel no hype. I only pre-ordered it through the Microsoft store for a free 1600 points (to be spent on Battleblock Theater). If it weren't for that old Dtoid story reporting the promotion (with a corgi picture of course), I would have actually let Ken Levine's latest effort pass me over. I have absolutely zero hype in me due in part to the lofty expectations thrust onto me when you mention how it follows after the first Bioshock. What could it due to earn its pedigree? What could I possibly be playing that fills the void of March's most anticipated release?
Luigi's Mansion motherfucker.
It's strange thinking how most Mario games feel devoid of personality and character. They're about a lovable Italian plumber jumping on various creatures because a dinosaur kidnapped his loaded girlfriend and practically everything has a cutesy face. Then again, we're not talking about a Mario game. We're talking about a Luigi game. There are few games where I'd opt to walk instead of run but in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, I enjoy walking so I can take in the scenery of Luigi's diorama-like rooms and just the chance to hear Luigi hum along with the theme music. Watching his nervous walk try to deal with a jaunty little tune is something I have yet to tire of.
I'm not a big veteran of adventure games either. Especially the old school, point and click variety. But Luigi's Mansion is essentially a point and click mystery adventure without any physical clicking. Door stuck? Time to get exploring for a solution! Machine not running? Figure it out! Sometimes I need hours to realize something simple like a door is hidden or something.
Luigi is easily the most motive character I've seen in a long time too. His eyes dart, his teeth chatter, he jumps at the slightest indication of danger. Luigi might be a scaredy cat but he is my hero. There's something so magnetic about him and his status as an underdog. It's heartwarming too because we're both little brothers. Despite his brother always getting top billing, Dark Moon looks like it cements his status as an adventurey, ghost busting brother of the duo.
At the previous week's suggestion, I also jumped into Phantom Breaker and man was that a good idea. Take everything you love about fighting games and transplant it successfully into a 2D beat'em up. Pressing up to jump, meter building combos, special and super attacks. Throw in some character building before you get to experience everything plus a suite of characters to choose from plus unlockables and you get a decidedly addictive anime flavored experience. I'm already into anime, so it doesn't bug me but your results may vary on that front.
I've been having trouble getting new blogs out but hopefully I can get a few ideas that have been sitting on my notebook out soon.
In other irl news, my girlfriend stayed over with me this past weekend to celebrate my birthday together a bit late. She used some of her Spring Break time to make the stay possible and while mixing my family with my girlfriend sometimes feels like I'm carefully mixing Cherry Coke with nitro glyceryn, it feels like it was a successful weekend overall. Not only did I have one of the most enjoyable weekends with my girlfriend so far, but I dare believe my parents might actually start liking my girlfriend a bit more. I mean, before they either didn't care all that much of tried to steer me into the idea of dating more but now they seem to like her more as a person at least.
