LONG BLOG

Cblog Recaps of 03/19/14 and Striderisms!

   0

Today was my first day back in a classroom in 5 years. I haven't been a student in so long, someone who submits themselves to the mercy of a teacher, in such a long time. It was disorienting to pick up skills I hadn't used in so long such as math with fractions, solving for x, and other such high school math skills that I simply did not use in my 4 years of college for a BA in journalism.

And yet that degree has served me no better than a scrap of paper that says, "Give me a job."

I'm going back to ITT Tech of all places to try getting an AS in Information Technology, so I can at least aim to be the IT guy in your typical office. It is after all a position that finds no lack of space, unlike the rapidly shrinking writing position with a website or magazine. But first I have to get through unenjoyable periods of homework, assignments, papers, and bureaucratic grade hopping, not to mention the heaps and heaps of student loans I've just gotten myself into. I managed to graduate Cal State Long Beach debt free thanks to using my government afforded Pell grant. But that baby is all dried up and I'm left with money bags with strings attached to them.

If there's anything I can take away from this, its that I feel I have a direction now. The pressure of spending my own money and entering a cruel and unforgiving education feels like there's a tangible goal line in sight for me, however long or expensive it may be.

Also, I get a loaner laptop for e-books and a fresh new laptop is just what I need to enjoy Steam in all its glory.

It's probably no better than my current laptop but the fact that's its fresh and not weighed down by personal data and junk allows me to play games I should've been able to play before but couldn't. Did you know my old laptop could not play FTL of all games? It was eerie playing it so smoothly on this Dell laptop without nary a drop in frame rate. I still need to try a lot of other things I've had trouble with before like Recettear, Hotline Miami, and Prison Architect. I may even give TF2 another go after loading it with a mess of low spec, performance inducing scripts (the kind that make the game butt ugly but super easy to run).

Of course, to make sure it stays this way, this work laptop is purely for use for work and just Steam. No other things like music, movies, streaming, or other seedy unmentionable internet browsing experiences. I have to treat this thing like a holy relic if I want to continue playing at least enjoyable low grade experiences the likes of FTL on it.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
