LONG BLOG

Cblog Recap for 11/15/17 + Thanks be to Games

   0

So we are getting close to the time of year I love most...Thanksgiving (American version 2.0)!  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  It gives me an excuse to eat way too much without people judging me.  Actually, they are likely still judging me but whatevs.  Anywho, I figured I'd give you all a list of games I'm thankful for to mark the occasion.  Note this isn't a top game list, just games that I am thankful for, for one reason or another

Limbo/Inside

As you can probably tell from my avatar, I'm a huge Limbo fan.  One of my favorites of all time.  Limbo and Inside showed me that more isn't always better.  They are shorter games, with tight gameplay, and the story is told through gameplay.  They are beautifully crafted and it shows what can be done and that some times less is more and for that I am thankful.

Prey 2017

This game was an absolute shock to me.  I got it on a whim because I was bored and man did it deliver.  It is definitely a top GOTY candidate for me.  This game gave me all kinds of freedom to play the game how I wanted.  At a time in my life when I felt like I had no control, it was perfect.  It helped get me through some tough stuff this year and I will forever remember it as that.

A Link to The Past

I won't get in to an argument over what the best Zelda game is (it's A Link to the Past FYI), but I will say that this is the game that set me on a path toward being a gamer.  I fell in love with everything about it and it made me want to play more video games.  It was just perfect to me and remains one of my favorite, if not my favorite games of all time

Perfrct Dark N64

This game is probably the game that I have gotten the most play time out of.  Ever.  I'd hate to guess how many hours were spent playing this with friends.  It is in my opinion one of the best ever FPS.  I loved the ridiculous characters and story and the splirt screen co-op and multiplayer kept me coming back.  This game also introduced me to my best grade school friend I had.  Thanks Perfect Dark!

Knights of the Old Republic

This is quite simple actually.  I love Star Wars and I love video games and this combined the two.  For me this was the best Star Wars game ever.  The quintessential RPG.  Big props to BioWare for making my two loves come together.

So what games are all of you thankful for?  Not necessarily your favorites but ones you are thankful for.  Recap time!

S - ALinkToTheDan is back with more of his Tone Deaf series. It's been a couple weeks but it's worth the wait as he takes a look at the music of Metroid Prime. I must say, some wonderful music

    Mashed potatoes are best potatoes

S - Xeo gives us a blog looking at some of the stuff he's been dealing with as of late. A tough year, but he takes solace in our community here. I really like Xeo and am glad he's here with us. I hope things start turn around for such a good guy

D - EvilCoGames gives us a look at the development of their upcoming game project. They are an indie team working on Star Story: The Horizon Escape. It's a nice look at what they are currently working one

D - DinoSir gives a nice look at one of his upcoming projects. He gives a look at SuperSportsball, namely the art direction. From what I am seeing, this looks like it will be a fun game and hopefully a smash hit!

Just remember, he who stands on toilet, is high on pot--Dere

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
