C-blogs of 8-31-09 and Qalamarisms

I'll keep this brief. My brain is taking on the characteristics of a puddle of overcaffienated goo right about now, I've worked 8 days out of the last nine in order to get my days off for PAX this week. But I know you guys don't want to hear about that, you're here for the recaps.

It was fairly busy today. The usual flurry of end of month last-minute Musings were all pretty good, and there's some neat artsy stuff too. Don't forget to check out the Dreamcast contest Dtoid Artisans is holding, you can check it out in the contest section or via the recaps sidebar.

It's interesting what you can find if you poke around on YouTube, isn't it?

*-"That robot's a spy!" A Very Drunk Panda made a printable Mr. Dtoid mask. I'd love to see a couple of these in the crowd at PAX.
*-WalkYourPath seems incapable of mediocrity. His latest article on media scapegoats is one of his finest to date, however.
*-Canti-Sama's second entry in the "Post-Mortem Monday" series looks at Fallout 3's downloadable content. As a PS3 owner for whom this stuff is finally about to become available, this is highly relevant to my interests.
*-Suitcoat Avenger's take on the Blue Bomber is awfully, awfully cute. It's almost as cute as the real-life version Craineum made last Halloween. PEW PEW PEW!

A-Ouched's wife has taken a shine to Fable 2, which he used as a springboard to think about the casual gamer's perspective on things.
A- CrocStock thinks the gaming industry might be a victim of its own success. Might there be another crash in the making?
S-It's been a pretty good release week, so What'd You Get? NihonTiger90 wants answers, dammit.
S-Tanukitsune continues the battle of the backlog, taking on some more iPhone games this week.
S-RandomBullseye's Random Select series takes a look at Clover studio's unusual brawler God Hand.
M-Y0j1mb0's Musing says you're all a bunch of dirty cheaters. Why you gotta cheat so much, cheater?
M-AKK's Musing takes GTA4 to task for a wildly inconsistent difficulty curve.
M-Capm Trevo's Musing looks at poor, picky players.
M-Bishna answered the call for the weekly musing with a proposal that Berlin tried from 1961 to 1989.

C- Destructoid Artisans, in honor of the DreamCast's 10th anniversary, are holding a contest. Show how much you love the creamsicle console and you could win big.
E-Bubamacko's entry into the Cursed Mountain contest is... unique, I'll say that much.
E-Phantomile's entry, however, might be tough to beat.

F-Would you like to see Warhawk and Resistance 2 added back into the Friday Night Fights PS3 lineup? Let Takeshi know one way or another.
I-Please welcome Alfador to our metallic family.
I-And greetings also to GraveRisen. Welcome to Destructoid.
H-As you might expect from the name, Dr. Light ate your Magicite has quite an impressive retro gaming collection, including a working Virtual Boy.

N-Suitcoat avenger reported that Disney bought Marvel today. I don't think anyone saw this coming.
N-Pendleton21's college will soon offer a course that will instruct students how to play guitar using Guitar Hero as a teaching tool.

T-With so many games coming out in the next few months, Scals37 wonders what you've bothered preordering, for the bonus or otherwise.
R-JulianProxy played and quite enjoyed the newly-price-reduced Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

F-Capm Trevo found what is unmistakably our beloved mascot in an obscure anime series, "Magical Shopping Arcade."
S-Ol'UncleWedge wonders why people are surprised that the Arkham Asylum collector's edition isn't so great. It's not as though Warner Bros. were going to send you a working weapon when you bought their game.

R-In the "offbeat" column today, Novakaine posted a list of his favorite brown sugar in games.
C-It's not a bad observation, but a little more effort and content would make it a much more interesting blog.
?-This is probably where lots of people's heads went when they heard the news that Marvel and Disney would start makin' babies.

S-Troll or genuinely slow, in the end it really doesn't matter.
F-Biff to the Future put it best I think. "Herpes is supposed to make us appreciate cancer?"
F-This could have been a useful, interesting article. What a pity.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment

Is there a holiday or time of the year more indulgent than Thanksgiving? I mean, we cook a turkey that weighs as much as three newborn babies, whip up about a billion sides consisting mostly of carbs and butter, and top the whole thing off with nine different pies, all featuring the main ingredient of "excess." It's equal parts disgusting and awesome, and is definitely my second favorite holiday behind our dearly departed Halloween.

But we were so occupied with whether we could eat six pounds of food in one sitting, that we didn't stop to think if we should. That brings us to November's Bloggers Wanted prompt: Overstuffed.

Playing through Horizon Zero Dawn really got me thinking on this topic. Don't get me wrong, the game has a really cool and fairly unique sci-fi story, the combat is fun and engaging, and the art direction uses vibrant color - a concept that largely died out near the end of the PS2 era, but man, is it long. The map is huge and stuffed with nooks, crannies and collectibles, and boy, by the time I wrapped the story and collected my Platinum trophy the game had really worn out its welcome. It's a shame really, as I truly enjoyed the game for its main components; but by the time I had picked off my ten-thousandth evil villager and performed my ten-billionth stealth kill on a Ravager, I found myself wishing the game would end soon.

I got this feeling about 3/4 of the way into the game. That is not good.

Modern gaming is great in that developers tend to pack in a metric shit-ton of things to do in their games. Modern gaming is also horrible because developers tend to pack in a metric shit-ton of things to do in their games. This tendency to overstuff their games with content is often overwhelming and can cause an otherwise excellent experience to drag. It was less of a problem when I was 18 and had all the time in the world; at 30 with a day job and a family, it's a complete game-changer.

So, beloved Destructoid Community, tell of us a time you felt overstuffed from gaming! It can be from a game you enjoyed that just felt too long like above, a time you binged on all thirty-two Kingdom Hearts titles, a particularly meaty haul of games you got at a yard sale - anything at all that celebrates or at least discusses your Thanksgiving-like excesses in gaming!

Write a blog with "Overstuffed:" and then your subject in the title, and let the world know of your girthy gaming experiences! We love promoting blogs to the front page here at Dtoid, and Bloggers Wanted is a great way to get noticed *wink wink nudge nudge hip thrust*

Happy blogging, everyone!
