LONG BLOG

C-blogs of 6-25-09 and Qalamarisms

   0

I apologize, I just don't have much to say tonight. There are several great blogs in the topsauce, a couple of superb monthly musings. I considered posting a Michael Jackson video here, but I think there's plenty of that going around on the net right about now. So here's a tribute to a couple of other fallen celebrities instead.

*-This is an interesting story I hadn't heard anywhere else... did you know about the accusations of plagiarism regarding the Wii/PS2 versions of Ghostbusters? Read this and let Pagz fill you in.
*-Batthink's Musing discusses the untapped potential of the noble polygon's competition... Voxels. If you read this, you'll probably learn something new.
*-ThaFNFreak wrote about the unexpected, the left turn, the curveball for this month's Musing topic. Spoilers abound here, but it's worth it.
*-I think I do a reasonable job of keeping my internet life and my meatspace life separate. Elsa looks at why that's becoming harder, but is worth the effort.
*-Tavendale combined the Final Fantasy minigame Triple Triad with Pokemon, Futurama, Dragonball Z and pretty much anything else you can think of. Great introduction, welcome to Destructoid.

A-SpilledMilk shares some information about a free Quake-like FPS game called Warsow.
S-There's a healthy list of games that were released this week and at the bottom... Diabolik? As in the last and final MST3K ever aired?
S-Wry Guy's excellent series on getting the most out of Goozex wraps up with these advanced tips.
A-PrinceofCannedPeaches wrote quite a nice article about Battlefield Heroes and the history of the gateway game.
A-Walkyourpath thinks fanboys should start showing their pride on their cars. I'm pretty sure 12 year olds still aren't allowed to drive, though.

I've had Ghostbusters on the brain lately. Did you know most of the writers for this show went on to work on Batman: the Animated Series for Warner Brothers?

S-Frank Joselin reminisces about old times and old names.
R-On its own this would have been a failblog, but the comments saved it. Rest in peace, Mr. Jackson.

N-NihonTiger90 brings us this story about independent game devs vs. the XBox's indie games market.
V-With 5 days left until Blazblu's release, S0lesurviv0r shares some videos showing off some of the quirkier elements of the game.
R-Tubatic's first impressions of Conduit make it sound like it's worth taking a look at.
T-the Tyke ponders the future of the PSP Go.
T-HydeGFF reflects on President Obama's recent statements about gaming and parenting.
T-Garison thinks the PSP Go means Sony will have to get their act together on making prepaid cards more universal. What do you think?
R-t0pc0w reviews Ghostbusters on the 360.
T-Is Michael Jackson's death really video game related? Kotaku thinks so, and Analoge takes them to task for it.
T-TripleZer0 doesn't want to play Brutal Legend. Ok, no one's forcing you.
D-Dead Movie Star is a MACHINE. He's made another tough platformer with music that reminds me of the Ren and Stimpy theme song. That's a good thing.
$- Smasher Imp shares a free indie game called Black Shades with the community. I think this was featured on Indie Nation a while back.
$-And another freebie highlighted by Smasher Imp, Cottage of Doom. Was this an Indie Nation title too?

M-TewDee looks at the soundtrack for Ikaruga. Videos are posted, audio is available. It's all good.
M-Nuka Cola's drumming series continues with this video wherein he provides cadence for Breath of Fire 2.
F-My brother downloaded the Rifftrax for the original Transformers and I think that's the only way you could ever get me to watch it again. Still, I'm forced to admit that Megan Fox is quite decorative. Here's an interview with the young lady, brought to you by Kris S.

L-Wilbo tackles his greatest challenge FOR CHILDREN in this strangely compelling video. A good soundtrack and snappy editing count for a lot.
R-Brian Keljore is living out his Real World: Destructoid fantasies via The Sims 3.
R-...Or he was, until his computer decided to crap out on him.
V-The latest HAWP stabs you in the gut of comedy.
R-AKAthatoneguy touches on a few topics at once. inFamous, Mike Tyson, and the King of Pop are all discussed.
?- RobotBebop starts Fanboy Friday off a little early.
R-Some WoW cosplay copypasta. What's Ursula from The Little Mermaid doing in there?
R-Rageblog about Gears of War 2 multiplayer.

F-I don't. Wait. What?
F-Occasionally a post is so bizarre, so antithetical to what it should be, that I have a hard time coming up with a description. Call it a mental block if you will. I just find it very hard to believe that anyone who's been around long enough to want to participate in the monthly musings would miss the mark so badly.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
First Kiss

No matter what the experience was or which game or genre left that strong first impression, such experiences have the potential to open our eyes to the rich history of a series or genre. With any luck, we might find even more to love or something better. A great first experience with RPGs could lead to an undying love affair.

Sometimes a first kiss can be so impactful that the game gets placed on a pedestal and enshrined as a gold standard, which has its own pros and cons. I mean, it is nice to have a basis for comparison, but some folks take it too far. There are people who loved Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy VII so much that nothing after them really got a fair shake.

So first impressions matter -- they can shape and inform our gaming habits. I grew up on arcades, Nintendo, handhelds, and eventually into RPGs, so much of what I play will be influenced by how I acquired my tastes. I probably like Overwatch a ton because it has a passion for RPG roles, but contextualizes them closer to older shooters focused on objectives more than gear builds and grinding out perks for better killstreaks.

So for this month's Bloggers Wanted, we'd like you head over to the community blogs write about your first kiss, the games that positively influenced you or maybe biased you a little too much for a time. What turned you on to a series or genre? Was it love at first sight? Did it set any expectations in stone or possibly lead you to something better?

Whatever the case might be, remember to use the title "First kiss" and place "Bloggers Wanted" in the tags!
