C-Blogs of 3-25-10 and Qalamarisms

What's this? Some kind of witchcraft? A hideous, glaring mistake? (Well, maybe.) A time-space anomaly resulting from a spacewarp?

I still have a shirt like the dude on the left in my closet somewhere. God I feel old.

Nahhhh. Actually, our newly-greyscaled Thursday recapper has joined the multitudes winging their way to Boston this weekend for the inaugural PAX East show. Jet lag and spotty internet connectivity have presumably worked their wonder twin powers on him, so I'm filling in. Simple as that.

I'd like to thank those of you who answered my question on Monday about what PC game I should try next. Despite an early lead, Borderlands faltered in the stretch and it looks like my next challenge will be to guide Marcus and Dom through the dreary future the Locusts have created.

Anyway, I've got a lot to get through, looks like lots of people want to get in on this month's Musing before the calendar rolls over. Let's get to it.

*-Capm Trevo uses science to decode the mysteries of the RPG, coming to a shocking conclusion! The first in what will hopefully become a new series.
*-God, Enkido, this is fantastic. It's like poetry in my mouth. Music in my eyes. All that and a grim warning of things to come.
*-Steph Louise K's Musing makes a modicum of modesty its motive.
*-Beyamor writes the last review you'll ever need to read about any game's sequel. It's only funny because it's true.
*-Low Tech had the good fortune to write a Pokemon blog on my watch. This might get the topsauce anyway though, since it's a great introduction to hidden stats using language anyone can understand.

A-Cadtalfryn writes that as much as the gameplay in No More Heroes 2 was improved, it lost something intangible with the change.
A-At the time of this writing, Velt's post about hysteria and censorship didn't have any comments, and that's a damn shame.
A-Randombullseye freely admits he's an asshole in games. And that's OK!
M-DanielCampbell's Musing encourages us to buy with the brain up top.
M-While not an officially licensed Monthly Musing, Om Nom Nom on Souls' article certainly fits the theme. Apparently owning a console can get you laid?
M-Dr Light Ate Your Magicite thinks that for sex in games to move forward, the medium as a whole must mature.
S-It's Thursday, so it's time for Gemsi's EU release dates.
P-Animucast episode 8 is available for your listening pleasure.
P-321Gocast episode 12 is now live and features one of Dtoid's newest editors, Mr. Andrew Kauz.

C-Tray Ben has an extra Persona 4 poster and all he wants in return is your comment.

C-JT Icefire's gonna be at PAX, but he feels a little nervous. Don't worry, you're in for a great time!
C-Count Grishnack's been having a significantly less great time. The support of the community is heartwarming to see, though.
R-Robert Culp, voice of Dr. Wallace Breen in the Half Life sequels, died earlier today. He will be missed.
R-A fine actor and a terrific villain, dead at 79.

N-Nilcam wrote up a comprehensive guide to everything we learned about King of Fighters XIII today.
N-The Silent Protagonist brings word that Atlus will be replacing any defective copies of the music CD that shipped with their most recent game.
T-Ran24 shares this free flash games he describes as "Peggle with zombies." I'm sold.
T-Capsulex wrote about a game that legitimately scared him... and it's probably not what you're thinking.
T-Dr Face Doctor makes the argument that consoles are helping spur PC games to get better, not killing them. What do you think?
R-Ruicraveirinha's review of Machinarium convinced me to give the demo a spin.
R-DaedHead8 posted a spoiler-free review of Bad Company 2's single player campaign.
D-Beyamor's been fascinated by the concept of one-button games recently, and decided to take a run at the idea. You can try his creation here. That looks like 'Lectro Lemon. Is that supposed to be Lemon?

A-Aliens Vs. Predator Vs... Pooh bear? Oh bother, indeed. Nice find, Antwhan.
A-Jack Maverick arted a little.
M-The revelation that Jimi Hendrix's works would soon be available on Rock Band sent Occam's Electric Toothbrush into a frenzy of happiness and GIS.
F-Antwhan shares the trailer for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Michael Cera's just been on a roll lately.
F-Mooks linked it too, and added some awesome VG related art.
F-TheJesusNinja recaps Lost.

C-This ended up not panning out, but it was an easy mistake to make. I feel bad putting this here, but it's not really news.
C-I love Metroidvania games, and I would like to hear more about the one you're making. A little more content next time would go a long way, though.

The heel-turn

Last week, in the quick posts of Destructoid's community, we saw the rise and fall of community manager Wesley J. Russow. He rose to prominence with his immutable power, only to see it come crashing down as the working class clambered beneath him and tore him down. Truly, the life and times of Westopher G. Raggamuffins was a lesson in live fast, burn hot, crash spectacularly.

Wes went from community darling to lovable despot over the course of a few days. It was a thing of beauty to behold. Truly, nothing is better to witness than a real-life heel turn. Wrestling is nothing without these terms after all. A "Face" is a good guy wrestler who fights the man, stands up for the little guy, and fights fairly while still winning. A "Heel", on the other hand, is a despicable, dastardly villain or even anti-hero. I loved Kurt Angle's antics as this gold medal Olympic winner turned wrestler who wasn't necessarily as likable as his gold medals imply. I loved hating that guy! A good heel is fun to hate, and there's nothing quite like the gasp of shock when watching the turn, when a face uses dirty tricks and turns into a heel.

Let me ask you this: is Kratos a hero? Before we see Kratos return in what I'd call Dad of War, let's not forget Kratos’ sordid past as a hero. In the first game, it was a revenge tale. It was a story of a mythical Spartan warrior who wanted revenge on the God of War who betrayed him. But as the series went on, it became a story about the lengths Kratos would go to justify his vendetta against people who wronged him. He would literally destroy the world just to destroy his enemies. Sure, we played as him, and we were taken on a ride, but would you really put your bet behind him and say, "Yeah, look at that hero!"

This month's Bloggers Wanted is about your favorite heel-turns or anti-heroes (in case a heel turn is too specific). Do you like it when Ryu turns into Evil Ryu? Or maybe you like Injustice, with its built in heel-turn Superman? I won't claim to understand the time line of Revolver Ocelot between Snake Eater and Guns of the Patriots, but I love that knucklehead.

To participate, just start a blog in our community section and title it "Heel-turn: [your blog title here]." Write to your heart's content, and if its up to snuff, you'll see your stuff published on the front page! Just remember, you're telling us about your favorite heel-turns and anti-heroes, not becoming one yourself, like Wes. Rest in spaghetti, never forghetti.
