LONG BLOG

C-Blogs of 3-22-10 and Qalamarisms

Good evening, Destructoid.

It's been a long time coming, but over the last week I finally upgraded my computer. It's a nice feeling having a system that no longer chokes when I have 10 webpages open, and believe me, that makes doing the recaps a lot easier. It had been over five years since my last major overhaul... I remember distinctly wanting to get my system ready for Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft.

With this added computational tumescence, I can now play a lot of games I've had to pass on previously, simply because my machine couldn't handle them. The problem is... there're several of these, and I'm not exactly sure which to tackle first. So, I thought I'd leave it to you, recap fans. Here are the options:

Gears of War. I don't own an Xbox 360, but I know this is one of the more influential games of this generation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. I'm told this is the epitome of first person shooting though I doubt I'll touch the multiplayer, especially since the sequel has drained the playerbase.

Borderlands. I'm late to the party on this one (though not as late as I am on CoD:MW), so I'm guessing I'd end up playing solo, which may defeat the purpose of the game.

No matter what, I'm gonna be shootin' dudes in the face. I guess when you come right down to it, it's all about exactly what kind of dudes you think I should shoot. Leave your answers in the comments and I'll begin with whichever game has the most votes by Thursday.

*- Suitcoat Avenger's latest artblog features a frightening Pac-Man, veiny boobs, and the most adorable Cyclops ever.
*-Om Nom on Souls, despite what his name may suggest, has a heart. This piece on player choice and morality confirms it.
*-We don't have a category for Foodtoid, so I'll just leave this here.
*-Occam's Electric Toothbrush combines mini-reviews with Haiku and image-fu to create something so much more than the sum of its parts.
*-AverageJoe1 took exception to Jim Sterling's depiction of his own job. It's a small thing, but a vital one in his eyes.

A-Xyzliac has a film recommendation for y'all; Gracie's Choice. Apparently it's the cinematic equivalent of Deadly Premonition.
A-Wry Guy has a love for 2D fighters I can't even begin to understand. In this article he explores their apparent demise and glorious resurrection.
A-Alakaiser wonders how many people is TOO many in an online environment? It's a long read, but a good one.
M-Canti-Sama's musing argues that sex should be in more games. I'd rather not see it in Katamari Damacy, thank you.
M-Sandorasbox thinks sex in games was better when it was alluded to rather than explicit.
P-Back to the Filmcast episode 2 is now available.

C-Diverse is giving away 5 free copies of Cave Story on Wiiware, something I support fully. If you don't win, don't forget you can still download the original on the PC for free. Everyone should play this game.
C-And if you don't win Diverse's, you can always try winning one from Nicalis directly.
C-Scion of Mogo's generosity abounds. He has some nifty comics you can win from Emerald City, if you are so inclined.

No community stuff today. That's unusual.

This was the first Google image result for "unusual."

N-for the first time ever, there will be an official console launch in the Phillipines. Garganroo is understandably excited.
N-Pink T. Hawk CONFIRMED for Brawl. I mean... Wait. Shit.
R-Dek reviewed Final Fantasy XIII.
R-As did CharlieKun.
R-Sebastian Paul Lopez microreviewed God of War 3. Occam's Electric Toothbrush made me giggle in the comments.
P-IconStyle gives us a preview of the PSN game Patchwork Heroes.
T-Opa-Opa was wondering what the first game you can remember playing is? Mine was a tabletop version of Pac Man, as I recall.
T-Zulkyr's thoughts on DRM, Activision's "Because we can" policy, and some other stuff.
D-Agent Oli recently attended Microsoft's Gamecamp, where the challenge was to build a game from start to finish in 48 hours. His team won "most experimental" and you can try it out if you like.
$-It's probably too late if you're reading this, but Dante's Inferno was on clearance at Amazon today. Thanks for the heads up, ShawnKelfonne.

S-Paul Soth may just have created the ultimate fighting stick, using some twisted form of electronic necromancy he calls SCIENCE!

L-So Bad Company 2 is just like every other multiplayer online shooter then. Awesome.
L-I think Nekobun's been smokin' Onions. Or maybe reading one.
V-When I heard Kratos had killed a brazillion enemies, this is not what I pictured. That's really more of a spoken word joke, isn't it? Let's move on.
C-It's nicely ironic, I'll give you that. But Jim's a big boy, and perfectly capable of defending himself.
C-While this post is well written, Destructoid is primarily a video game blog, not exactly intended for personal rants or "what I did today" kind of blogging. Still, awesome avatar.
R-Mitsugeta has been replaying the Xeno series recently.

S-Unfortunately, that contest ended last week.
F-Cool story bro.

What, this Pokemon meme is still going on? Well, all right.
M-Bonsly.
C-Bangorang? Waiiiit a minute. You! Outa the pool.
M-Ekans. Somehow the last picture link being broken is wonderfully appropriate.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
