LONG BLOG

C-blogs of 12-7-09 and Qalamarisms

   0

I'll keep it short and sweet here. Thanks again to Funktastic for filling in for me last week. I was taken down by a fast-moving illness from which I have not yet fully recovered. If you have some free time over the next couple of weeks, why not check out some Mystery Science Theater 3000, now showing on Hulu? Sadly, Space Mutiny is not among the episodes currently available, but perhaps in time...

Anyway, let's get to those recaps, shall we?

*-Ain't enough Product in the WORLD to make Seymour Guado's haircut in real life. Might be fun to try, though.
*-Ckasaru wrote up an indie game that (graphically, at least) reminds me of Cave Story in the best possible way. Why not have a look?
*-LK4O4's blog makes me wish I'd bought Space Invaders Extreme 2 last week when it was the deal of the day at Amazon. But this month's been ruinous on my wallet as it is. Check out the art project near the end, though.
*-Ubersuntzu wrote up a licensed game from days gone by... and he swears it doesn't suck.

A-Bulletmagnet is a connoisseur of the obscure. Here he recounts his efforts to import and play Mushihime-sama Futari. It's fairly epic.
A-Brutal Legend isn't a bit like Earthbound except for being a quirky title with a unique sense of humor that not everyone will appreciate. Oh, now I get it.
A-Campbell00 wrote up a great list of tunes from some older games that have made getting through the back half of the recaps today much more entertaining.
M-SykoShadow's introduction is also a Musing about his love/hate relationship with Mark Ecko's Getting Up... and he works Uncharted 2 in there, too.
M-Ifrit2K5's Musing for the month looks at some plastic guitar games.

E-DtoidEurope is having a New Year's blowout, and YOU'RE invited! (Transportation not included.)
E-DtoidSF will be rockin' tha eff OUT at Umloud, a charitable event with all proceeds going to Child's Play.
S-Capm Trevo needed help, and the community was there for him.
S-Puppy Licks is about to start his World Tour and wanted to take care of some business first.
I-Welcome to Kibs, a refugee from Brian Crecente's Hair Palace.

N-Early rumors about the PS4's hardware have started. I think the economy is going to keep the current generation of hardware static for at least a few more years.
R-AndrewG009 reviewed Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.
T-NightV thinks the rumor that Sony might be helping to fix Bayonetta might be leading to better games all around.
T-G-off wrote about reviews. This might be worth clicking on if you're a Blehman fan.
P-HBL thinks everyone should at least TRY the Bayonetta demo.

A-DanMazkin designed a shirt. What do you think?
A-This "Tattoo" makes me feel all suspicious. I think it might wash off if you doused it in Root Beer.
M- Nekobun is in control for dTunes this week.

R-Kavahn NightViper Mansouri (Geez, that's a mouthful. I'm just gonna call you KNVM from now on, 'k?) thinks the Sims franchise is promoting (or at least tacitly approving of) date rape.
R-Megastryke found some oddly familiar toys at his local mall...
C-There's a forum thread where you can post the games you've beaten. Just saying.
C-Welcome to the community and all, but we'd really prefer you not just dump everything you've ever written here before you introduce yourself.

F-If I weren't so polite, I'd invite you to perform a biologically impossible act upon yourself. Anonymouse, though? You're brilliant.
F-God, I go away for a week and everything goes to hell.
F-This is like surreptitiously putting meat juice in a man's underpants the day before he visits a poodle farm. Funny, but WRONG.
S-Oh, come on now. This was over before Sunday Night.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
