Not much in the way of -isms today. As you can probably tell, the Recaps squad and myself are behind on things and busy. So have some pics today!



* - Handy's 2013 gaming awards. Truly, a good list.

* - Waifus of the year 2013

* - Dreamweaver espouses his love for Citadel; his favorite DLC of all time.

A - Chris Carter's 10 best games of 2013. This guy has sampled the bunch, and like everyone SHOULD have, he included MGRR.

A - Bill Platt's GOTY picks. Spoiler: there are some Nintendo games. :)

P - Pocketoid numbah 45! Crackity & Jackal review all 8 3D classics, and a lot more.

A - Plombo lists the best games he played in 2013, without regard as to when they actually released. Good list!

A - Gray Time runs down the MGS series in chronological order, to prepare for Geound Zeroes.

A - Pocketoid recorded their GOTY episode.



S - The holidays and Nintendo systems seem to go hand-in-hand. taterchimp checks it out and hits wall #1 in Monster Hunter.

S - lostleader had a pretty good year, despite him not finishing his resolution. He's got some more backloggery to conquer for 2014.

C - AlphaDeus needed some help with a broken keyboard. Seems cool now, but you could always check out his music :D

R - Terry 309 reviews Diablo. The original one! Fun fact, you can still play online.

P - domanz gives us a preview of Bravely Default, from Europe (where the game is out.) He seems to like it a lot.

$ - pedrovay2003 alerted us to a smashing deal for the Wii.

T - Cyrus' games of the year, 2013. No other list you'll see has TWO Hatsune Miku games.

T - Terry 309 thinks RTS games should come to Wii U, and I agree wholeheartedly.

T - Reinhold Hoffman wants to highlight Mobygames.com. Anyone familiar?

T - Alex Wilikie wants devs to remove unlockable difficulties and just let us pick our own level of punishment.

T - Why should videogames be stifled for not being "gamey" enough?

T - lostleader decided on his resolution for 2014: he'll be playing the games his friends suggest to him. The Friendly challenge.

R - Terry 309 reviews a game he believes is quite underrated: The Last Remnant.

P - More Bravely Default impressions, this time from Paddy Panic.



V - HDGamer takes a quick look at Windows 8.1.

R - SK120 reminds us to watch the amazing AGDQ 2014 marathon.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
