LONG BLOG

C-blogs of 12-29-08 and Qalamarisms

   0

Ah, the final Monday of the year is behind us. Before I get started I'd like to publicly thank our wonderful team of reserve recappers who covered for me the last two weeks while work was kicking me right between the cheeks. SilverDragon in particular has been doing yeoman's work in making sure we didn't miss an update.

We're closing in on the end of the year, and that's often a catalyst for people to look back, take stock, and reminisce about the time gone by. It's also a time to look forward to the year to come, and people have been using their C-blog accounts to do both.

Did 2008 feel especially long to you? You're not just imagining things. In addition to the leap year day at the end of February, 2008 will have one additional Leap Second added before the astral odometer resets for the year. I recommend using that last extra second to play a WarioWare Microgame... or a reasonable facsimile, like Four-Second Frenzy.

*-NihonTiger90 wants the best community moment and story of the year. Help him out, won't you?
*-Laxluster's series on raising a gamer continues with a review of Christmas toys and why you should always keep the remote handy while playing Fallout 3.
*-VGMan wrote a friggin' BOOK about Rhythm Tengoku. He really knows what he's talking about though, so set aside some time and have a look.
*-Atlas and CTZ whip `em out and grab a ruler. I'm not sure who won, but the comments are great.

S-RonBurgandy2010's Dtunes episode 56 records tonight. Or would, if it were a podcast.
S-The final "What'd you get?" of the year. NihonTiger90 got a new sig banner. Very nice.
A-GamingGoddess is playing through one of the early Tomb Raider games and writing about it. I've never played a TR game in my life, but this is quite well written.
A-This'd be better with some pictures to break up the wall of text, but it's clear some thought went into Saint Demon's list of the 10 worst videogame movies.

W-Not sure if this was from a contest, but Shipero got something pretty spiffy from Maxvest.
W-Togail won that sweet, sweet Persona 4 prize pack. I think I speak for everyone here when I say congratulations, you son-of-a-bitch.

I-Cotton McKnight's introductory post. Welcome to Destructoid. Please get an avatar.
I-ShovetheJayOhBee introduces him or herself by sharing some of their favorite Flash games. Welcome, and thank you for ensuring this blog went up late. =p
C-NihonTiger wants some advice on what to get at the Steam Sale.
C-DeadMovieStar has been a D-toid member for 2 years now. Not too shabby.

N-Call of Duty World at War was on sale earlier today. N-gage version ftw.
T-Some thoughts and mockups of the potential future of handhelds. Nintendo isn't gonna drop the touch screen. Haven't you heard it prints money?
T-Covah is surprised that there are idiots on XBL. Well, maybe not. The header image is worth the price of admission.
T-How is the remake of Chrono Trigger selling?
T-Aurion (formerly Funky Goodness) has a top ten of 2008 list you may want to see.
R-AgentMoo reviews Crazy Penguin Catapult. Looks like fun.
D-RandomBullsEye is still doing some clean-up work on BonerQuest. He's hired the best to help.
D-For example, Tascar did a great job on the music.
T-An eclectic top ten list by NotAZombie.
N-News about a possible Tatsunoko vs. Capcom sequel is already being batted around. The original must be good. Shame it'll never come stateside.
R-Review of Virtua Racing by Rider Chop.

A-Faith made a pink, pixelated Master Chief out of Perler beads. Have a look!
A-Miss Rio is having a sale at her Etsy store.
F-ShinjiRightHand reviews an Xbox Live movie called Raptor Island. Clever girl. Boy. Whatever.
F-The Chun Li movie trailer was released today.
S-BlindSideDork got something pretty sweet for Christmas. And tells where to buy a dismemberable zombie doll.
S-DrachulaX's Santa must have gotten a shipment from The Penguin's armorer. A gauntlet is cast down before BlindsideDork.

R-Free Disney ticket on your birthday. That's nice, but NVGR. The last line kinda hurt, too.
V-Mel Brooks does the Hitler Rap. Was this before or after The Producers?
C-Video from an XNA game. Not even a Morgan Freeman soundalike can save this one.
?-Starts out being about fear, morphs into being about boobs, then somehow wraps around to being about fear again. Very entertaining read.
C-Gotta agree with Atlas. 2007 is so 2007.

S-Blindside posted last weeks VGCats about Left4Dead. Christmas was last week, dude.
F-[/Bad blog] indeed.
F-Twitter is thataway.

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
