LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 12/16/13 + mcgeeisms + A REMINDER

   0

Two weeks in a row! That feels better. I hate not being around my community as much as I should be. Especially since last month saw my Dtoid run come into its...7th year?!? That can't be right. No...it is! Whoa. 7 years I've been lurking in the shadows of this internet space. The Destructoid videogame blogocube. Y'all make it pretty interesting, so thank you <3
Incidentally, I should be featured for a community interview soon if anyone is actually interested.

Speaking of community projects, I need to take a moment to remind you all that the Recaps team is in fact doing another 'best of' community blogs for 2013. It's huge undertaking that eats tons of time, so I'm asking you all to please speak up if you can think of a blog/blogger that should be highlighted. If you connected with something for any reason, let us know and we'll give it a look. If you think something got overlooked, tell us! If you think someone is simply rad and should get a spotlight, shout it from the mountain tops.

PM this account or contact any of the Recap team if you've got suggestions. Some of this stuff will get another shot at the FP as well as being featured in our special blog. (and really, don't hesitate to bother Andy Dixon if you think something should be considered for the FP, from any time.)

ReCAPS for yo ass.

* - SpielerDad loves cookies, booze and useless shit for Christmas. This man speaks the gospel. Check out his great blog featuring the top 10 useless gifts for gamers during Xmas. Also, bonus video of his super cute daughter. OMG!

* - Zuckerhund was clearly as broken as I was after viewing the beast known as VGX. And he's probably watched some of the clips more than once. Read part 4 (the final) and join The Gibbering in their moonlust.

A - Trev, as head of Playstation FNF, has heeded his title and kept up with the PS brand. I mean he got a PS4, and gives a detailed first impression of it. The UI sounds like a nightmare...read for yourself.

M - RenaudB90 gets to number 4 in his best 8 games of the generation. It's also his GOTY for 2013. He's put about...212 hours into it so far. Holy hell. Check it out to see what it is!

A - Joeshadowman lays out how he thinks the game industry should be, and how all shaped it into what it is.

Leave a comment down there and you can have a code for Windborne or a closed beta key for Infinite Crisis. Your choice. Cus that's how we roll.
I - Say hello to Wrath and Pride! You've probably seen him around plenty, but he finally made an intro blog.

H - mistic is making some good progress on Teh Lair V2.0. NARPs in teh future!

N - Retrofraction brings us the news that Legend of Dungeon got updated with 3 new modes. including a daily challenge! I agree that those sort of things are going to make Roguelikes more & more popular, especially with the LP crowd.

A - BeatBeat gets deep in this installment of Comictoid.

C - Jake Petersen has a nice cross-post from his site about the future of first-person-shooters. Could take a second look at the formatting, though, instead of just copypasta.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
