LONG BLOG

C-blogs of 10-12-09 and Timewarpisms

   0

Cast your mind back 48 hours, gentle reader. It seems so long ago, does it not? A simpler time. A time before Brutal Legend & Uncharted 2. A time before internet fanboys got pissy about the reviews for the aforementioned games.

We do apologize for the lack of service over the last couple of days. There was a misunderstanding at Recap headquarters, magnified by an uncharacteristically heavy storm that knocked out my internet service. Shan't happen again.

*-Walkyourpath channeled Sir James of Sterling when writing this writeup of the finest game of his generation. Don't stop believing.
*-Y0j1mb0's semi-response to Megastryke's post about immersion is well worth a look.
*-It's rare that Scary Womanizing Pig Mask writes a blog, but when he does the results are worth the wait. This analysis of Giygas is mindboggling.
*-Canti-Sama's list of gaming pet peeves is something I think we can all relate to. Wil Wheaton said it, and Jesus agrees: Don't be a dick.
*-Sheppy's fast becoming one of my favorite bloggers around here. This piece on why Epic Mickey won't necessarily suck on the Wii is another reason why.
*-Kauza's piece about status effects has already been promoted, so you know it's good.

A-Covah went in-depth on some of the major upcoming releases. Even with everything getting pushed into 2010, this year's still looking goddamn expensive.
S-Nihontiger90 broke tradition by telling you what to get. Just kidding, as usual, he asked What'd You Get?
M-CWal37's Musing doesn't quite fit the mold, but it's a personal story of exploration and life apart from pixels and polygons.
S-Tanukitsune crossed Resident Evil 5 off his backlog list.
P-Failcast episode 49 is now available.
P-Drunkcast recorded on Monday.

C-Don't forget, you can win an assortment of Lucasarts-themed prizes for showing your art chops to the Destructoid Artisans.
W-This is pretty cool. Remember the Soapbox car TheBigFeel built that won the Red Bull Derby? Double Fine noticed and invited him to the Brutal Legend launch party.

C-While calibrating the lag on his new setup, LK404 had an epiphany about how much fun it can be to be silly.
I-Fructose introduced herself with a writeup of the DJ Hero demo stations now available at your local Best Buy. Welcome to Destuctoid.

N-Boatz beat the front page with this list of the Left 4 Dead 2 achievements.
N-More about the L4D2 cheevos.
N-while you once had a choice in the matter, that will end soon-- all World of Warcraft accounts will need to be merged with Battle.net before the month is out.
T-Unangbangkay had some early thoughts on Uncharted 2.
T-Lachlan Watts yearns for simplicity.
T-Jade Empire is making Tgammet violent.
R-Nogarda reviewed the South Park tower defense game.
R-A 20-year-old review of Castlevania courtesy of Solid Boss.
P- The not-quite-an-MMO Love is in early testing, and Snoogans775 is letting us in on all the good stuff.

M-It's Senisan82's turn behind the turntables for this week's dTunes. To start, a lot of great game-inspired metal.

L-How do you advertise Destructoid on a dating site? Here's how.
R-Something about Street Fighter? I guess? Maybe?
?-This post by Wry guy has several topics, including a challenge to the community and a call for entrants into a KOF tournament.
C-I don't like the tone of this blog. It's unnecessarily confrontational.
C-A link to an article on another site is generally a taboo, but at least there's an explanation and some additional words here.
?-Cool story, bro.

Well done, ladies and gents. Doughnut holes for everyone!

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
First Kiss

No matter what the experience was or which game or genre left that strong first impression, such experiences have the potential to open our eyes to the rich history of a series or genre. With any luck, we might find even more to love or something better. A great first experience with RPGs could lead to an undying love affair.

Sometimes a first kiss can be so impactful that the game gets placed on a pedestal and enshrined as a gold standard, which has its own pros and cons. I mean, it is nice to have a basis for comparison, but some folks take it too far. There are people who loved Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy VII so much that nothing after them really got a fair shake.

So first impressions matter -- they can shape and inform our gaming habits. I grew up on arcades, Nintendo, handhelds, and eventually into RPGs, so much of what I play will be influenced by how I acquired my tastes. I probably like Overwatch a ton because it has a passion for RPG roles, but contextualizes them closer to older shooters focused on objectives more than gear builds and grinding out perks for better killstreaks.

So for this month's Bloggers Wanted, we'd like you head over to the community blogs write about your first kiss, the games that positively influenced you or maybe biased you a little too much for a time. What turned you on to a series or genre? Was it love at first sight? Did it set any expectations in stone or possibly lead you to something better?

Whatever the case might be, remember to use the title "First kiss" and place "Bloggers Wanted" in the tags!
