What? It's time for Tuesday caps AGAIN?

I'm playing Dark Souls 2, which probably explains how I've so thoroughly lost track of time. I can't put it down of course, but I'm conflicted.

There are all sorts of things I love about the game. It looks fucking GORGEOUS and I'm glad I had the patience to wait for the PC version. Summoning works roughly 8000 times better than it used to. The game certainly is still super hard, so all those worries about an easy, breezy, beautiful Undead journey can be put to rest. But like a goddamn monkey paw wish, it seems to be hard in all the wrong ways.

While there is plenty to love, there is also plenty to bemoan. I'm nowhere near done, so maybe some of these issues will be alleviated further on or I'll at least come to grips with them, but Jesus, what is going on? Why are there so many pitched 3 (or more) on 1 fights? I regretted my pure melee knight build about 5 hours in after getting stomped in the Bastille by mob after mob of greatsword wielding street gangs. Same with the bosses that like to toss in extra baddies or attack in a group. The fight with Smough and Ornstien stood out in DkS because it was one of a handful of multi-enemy boss fights, plus the other ones - Gargoyles, Pinwheel, if you even count Nito (I wouldn't), and the 4 Kings - paled in comparison. They obviously wanted to recapture that epic and intense feeling, but the new bosses lack the personality and uniqueness to pull it off. Honestly, most of these group boss fights have been more annoying than anything else, and I find myself NEEDING to summon in other players to deal with them rather than it just being a option. It irks me. On top of the gang fights, it seems like many enemies don't have a stamina gauge anymore, and just attack based on whim. Is the enemy out of gas and likely to pause between attacks, or will he randomly just start the same combo over again? Who can say!? Just swing and pray.

I was planning on doing a mostly solo run through the game the first time, but it's been so tough that I might just try and tour Drangelic with my bro if we can line up the time to get on at the same time. If DkS2 wants to gang up on us, I think it's only fair to even the odds.

* - If you never noticed, Voltech likes to write.

A - A reasonable look at Mario Golf's DLC plans. Doesn't seem so bad when you break it down.
C - Hoffmann would like to see community reviews get more prominence on the site. Interesting idea! Not sure how Dtoid could really implement it without weakening their official review statements or flooding the site with review bickering.

I - Nice introductory blog from Ashrawr, swing by and say hi!

R - Infinite Undiscovery sounds super strange!

The Ruin Sentinels can go fuck themselves. Seriously, who makes a 3-way boss fight that starts on a 2 meter wide balcony that punishes you with fall damage when you inevitably get gang fucked off the side? Ugggggghhh.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
