LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 04/27, 04/28 & 04/29 '13 + mcgeeisms

   0

Lots of great blogs the past few days. It was another hard-to-pick Topsauce cap. This triple cap was sort of unexpected so apologies for the lateness and lack of -isms. How about a video or two instead?

* - A critique of Bioshock Infinite from Frohike. Very good stuff.

* - jebussaves88 writes about how there's nothing to write about when it comes to modern racing games. Where is the soul?

* - The first 'official' entry in the new series: Save State. This one is all about The Darkness. Specifically, the relationship between Jackie & Jenny. (Save State is an homage to Chad Concelmo's Memory Card. It's a community-based series, so if you want to join in, contact the Save State account.)

* - Alder B Dash introduces himself properly. And I do mean properly. Also, cocks.

A - MacManus remembers. He's not the only one, either. "Controversy" after "controversy" is the trend sure, but it doesn't mean we should just let it all go. We should remember.

A - dagiarrat is in love with Bioshock Infinite's artists, but not so much with the gameplay designers.

P - Taco Tuesdays extrasode 4: an interview with Johnson.

A - Vault91 and the defeat of sexism in gaming by the internet.

A - Meaningful or insane, BlinkingPixels wants you to deliver his poison with conviction.

P - Pocketoid gets on about Harmoknight, Slayin', Etrian Odyssey IV, and more portable stuff!

P - Johnny Fournier brings us: The Nerd Unemployed. A new podcast aimed at offering advice (and cautionary tales) for getting into these here nerd industries.

A - Echidna asks a most important question: Why the hell does he still like Sonic the hedgehog?!?

A - michealarby wrote a paper on piracy. Is piracy as bad as some claim? Or is it a force for good?

A - vlesditor has a lengthy read on feminist theory and videogames, using Earthbound as a discussion point.

A - Mikki Saturn talks about the seeming death, or at least scale back, of E3. (BTW I believe Nintendo WILL still have a conference of some sort. It's not quite clear yet.)

A - TheDustinThomas has noticed a parallel in between his gaming and his life.

A - Neshoba78 gets in on the hot topic at hand. Words like: boobs, politically incorrect, sexualization, etc. are used. Are 'we' making an issue where there is none? For a blog with "breasts" and "incest" in the title, there's a woeful lack of pics.

A - Scrustle doesn't feel the worlds' soul. How does this happen? Did it happen at all? Is he just feeling nostalgia?

S - Alasdair is still working on that backlog. He completed some games, and has voting up for us to decide one game he'll be playing this month.

S - amxwolf has a new MWHA for Luigi's Mansion and it's fabulous music.

A - ThatDocktorGirl writes this one for LowerTierPodcast about The Evil Within, and horror games in general. Weigh in with some favorites of yours, and your hopes for The Evil Within.

A - vlesditor has one about CivCity: Rome, and how educational it may or may not be.

C - AndyLonn contemplates just how he should do reviews for older games, which is always a bit of a conundrum. Got some advice for him?

C - TheToiletDuck is calling for Dtoiders from anywhere & everywhere to fill out his survey. It's for a blog about our culture & shit.

I - Toadeh introduces himself and his super special 3DS.

T - PhantomTommy has been playing Monaco, and...he can't fucking see.

R - Cyrus reviews Tales of Xillia 2. Can you say "party member?"

T - A decade of EVE Online. Wow! Not an easy feat. PIR tells us what's to come for EVE's future.

T - CommandZ thinks God Of War: Ascension is in love with itself. Do you?

R - Fyoomp has a scathing review of Mighty Switch Force.

R - Asterion reviews The Cat and the Coup.

T - Vincentlovescatherine think Call Of Duty is the worst game/franchise ever. I get it, but don't agree and I think the reasons are a bit cloudy.

T - segastardust has some mixed feelings about Black Ops II.

T - TroyFullbuster is a whiny bitch thinks DKCR3D getting an easy mode is the filthy casuals taking away our fun.

P - Bloodr0se has a nice write-up about Beyond: Two Souls, from the Tribeca Film Festival.

T - SinclairVox thinks you probably haven't played Lost Eden. It's got a talking, psychic parasaurolophus, so...maybe you should?

T - JackSlack thinks the ladies of gaming should have their Poker Night game. But who would star in such a game?? Weigh in for Poker Night 3: Ladies Night.

T - PlayBoyMan has a short response to "In Defense of Boobies."

T - Vault91 has a top 10 list for boxart from this generation.

T - domanz has a lot of love to give to Dark Souls.

T - Ars has some thoughts on sexy characters VS overly sexualized objects masquerading as characters.

T - Mr fairenhieght shares some positive memories based around Call Of Duty, and also don't be a hater.

T - dannybazooka thinks we might be expecting a bit too much from our games.

R - Adam P reviews Slender: The Arrival and seems pretty keen on it.

L - Johnel Lance breaks down some comics with a rant. I'm slightly lost.

V - Johnel Lance expresses his singular emotional reaction to the Sarah Palmer art for the comic series. Can you guess what it is? CAN YOU??

V - Considering even I missed the Fapcast, I don't think GlowBear needed to punish herself. BUT, she did it anyway. After writing a message on XBL (with the 360 controller! Punishment enough, I think) about it.

? - Do you know what my family would think of me if they knew I didn't really speak much Spanish at all?

L - Zombie Orwell gets his parody on.

F - RPGgrinders episode 239. Can you feel the role-playing excitement? I don't think I can.

F - NO. I cannot accept the truth within.

F - Alexander Diarmuid Southby Stone is a cool name. But just signing up, dropping a vid without introducing yourself or writing anything at all? Not the coolest.

F - Spammer extraordinaire and video maker JordanLloyd looks at another obscure arcade game.

Villains that did nothing wrong

Villains in all media, not just video games, can end up being a dime a dozen. Far too often, a villain's motives boil down to "I am a bad, and so I do bad things. Fear me." While this format has worked for countless stories, at this point in my life (the ripe old age of 20) I’ve become jaded and grumpy, finding myself rolling my eyes when I see yet another antagonist wreaking havoc with no background or reasoning presented as to why they’re being such a butthole.

What’s far more interesting to me is when a villain’s motives or actions come across as justified, perhaps leaving you rooting for them to defeat the protagonist [insert Elder God Tier villain meme here].

My favorite example of this would be Meruem from the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter. While he doesn’t necessarily fit the exact mold I laid out above, he’s easily one of the most dynamic and curious villains I’ve ever come across. For the sake of not spoiling what is perhaps one of the most exciting, action-packed, and tear-inducing arcs in anime history, I won’t delve into the details of what makes Meruem so great. Instead I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen Hunter x Hunter to set aside some time and plow through the series. Really, it’s that good.

But hey, that’s just how I feel. I’m sure there are folks out there who prefer their villains to be simple. If I ever met one of these theoretical people I might have a panic attack, but I’ll deal with that should the time come. I’m sure after some deep breaths we would get along. Maybe we could even snuggle, should my husband allow such an event to transpire.

All said and done, we arrive at the topic of this month’s Bloggers Wanted: Villains that did nothing wrong. Due to communication errors, this entry in the hallowed halls of Bloggers Wanted is a tad late. Regardless, all you have to do is head over to the Community Blog section of the site, and whip up a Cblog about a villain who you feel was secretly the good guy all along.
