LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 03/04/13 + mcgeeisms

Somehow, Monday came again. I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but, well, I am. That last week was way too short. In gaming news, there were some ripoffs, a new Assassin's Creed, another Wii U port not happening, some more Aliens: CM bullshit, yada, yada. Same old, same old. Except for the good stuff. Remember? If not, then you're being too negative. Motherfucker.

In no-one-cares news, I finally got a new 360! I've wanted one for awhile now, as it stopped reading discs a ways back. Bye, bye, 20GB model! Let me tell ya: being able to download all of the games I own and have them in the same space at once is MAGIC. A miracle, really. I mean, if you think about it, it's actually pretty amazing. Go ahead; think about it.

This grand acquisition means that not only can I finish some titles I haven't had a chance to finish, but I finally busted my copy of Dark Souls out of the plastic. I've been waiting a couple months for that. After the initial anger of seeing that the top of the case was broken somehow, I put it in and prepared for the punishment. It didn't disappoint. I died. (shock!) After only a couple hours, though, I already love it. It's brutal and smart and beautiful and omg I can't wait to delve into it further. I finished off day one by kicking the Taurus Demon off a bridge. Felt good, yo.
See you soon, knutaf.

Make your Tuesday positive, and make the most of your leftovers.
Read these CAPS or get some SLAPS.

* - Azudarko is going to be making a series of blogs about a tough subject to properly approach: gay portrayals in gaming. He/she has outlined their goal, and shared some introductory thoughts on the subject. It's very well-written, with a definite feeling of honesty & passion. Having read this first one, I sense this series will be something to keep your eyes on.

* - For our new Blogger's Wanted topic, GlowBear tells us how Dtoid helped her come out of her bear-shell a little more. Not...like...a real shell. A metaphorical one. Stupid.

A - Grimstar loves the fact that games, and other forms of art, can elicit such a range of emotion from people. Read about a couple that had him blowing his nose until it was raw.

A - TheKodu thinks devs/publishers are actually hurting themselves with this pre-order business. He says the Day One purchasers that don't pre-order are sort of punished in this scenario. Do you agree?

T - DePeir is not really feeling where the console market is headed, and has decided to build a PC. (smart guy!) See what he's putting together, and throw your two cents in there.

V - SeymourDuncan17 put together a nice little piece about Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army, with a video of his handiwork. There's some nice shooting, and some totally amazing music. Check it out.

D - Welcome Twisted Jenius to Destructoid! He and his partner made a game called Twisty's Asylum Escapades, and intends to share a dev blog after the fact. It should make for an interesting read.

D - Hey, Twisted Jenius is back already! He shares a little bit about himself, and his motivations for making a game. Probably not what you usually hear.

Wario here done by @GrumpyTurtle
F - E-sports are a kind of cool thing. This blog, however, is not.

Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
