LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 02/11/13 + mcgeeisms

   0

Another Monday in this short month has come to get you! There's been a lot of discussion all up in the C blogs, as well as the front page, and I must say: it makes for some good readin'. So first off: thank you. I don't have a lot of time to finish up my -isms today, so I just wanted to get that out of the way. It's been a good day to read Destructoid.
The folks participating in the Blogger's Wanted topic are especially engaging. Y'all made my Monday.

Blech. Short isms, unfortunately. I'll make up for it with pics! Maybe.

For Shade

* - Revuhlooshun gives us a great read about Siren, and makes a point, very well, about suspense VS surprise. God bless Hitchcock. (Holy shit front page already!!)

* - Capitalistpig (another new one!) draws some parallels between Dead Space and Alien. I love it!

* - Historicnerd gives us a look at Missile Command and its seemingly biggest influence: The Cold War. Good video, Historicnerd!

M - Our newest Blogger's Wanted topic is yielding some fine results. Panzadolphin56's entry focuses on a game I've never heard of before, called Hellnight.

A - GlowBear has some wise words about Ostracisation. Even within already ostracized groups. She also makes me feel better with a Maya Rudolph gif.

M - cmstrott (he's a new guy) has dealt with hallucinations throughout part of his life, and videogames have helped him deal with them.

M - DaviesAntony is obviously a big fan of being afraid. He believes that the genre will always have something for us.

M - Dreamweaver makes a really good case that co-op can actually be scary!

M - yourbelovedpariah has a run in with a very familiar fear. Deep into that darkness peering, long he stood there wondering, fearing, doubting...

M - Fallout 3 was at times, a nice & scary game. For L3ED, it hit pretty close to home.

S - Carbon64 has another entry in his VS series. This time it's a couple of arcade legends: Super Street Fighter II VS Mortal Kombat II.

A - EdgyDude thinks about Nintendo's Wii U strategy a lot more than the typical commenter. This one may get you thinking.

T - Osga21 thinks we're about due for another game industry crash. I won't disagree; if the industry keeps going the way it is, without changing, it's almost assured.

T - levelseeker has a well-written non-review of Forza Horizon. He wasn't quite as keen on it as some people. Read on.

T - Spencer Hayes gives me flashbacks of a Memetoid gone horribly wrong some time ago. Thankfully, this is better. Are you happy, ShadeOfLight? Time to start claming your Pokemon while you can!!

P - SeymourDuncan fucking gets a goddamn hammergun boner.

F - She's just a girl and she's on fiiyyaaaaaaaa

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
