LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 02/04/14 + Wrenchisms

   0

Good news, I started a new job!

Bad news, I'm super tired and feel like a crumb bum. Why did you guys have to write so many blogs today of all days!? But at least you all brought the goods, some great blogs went up today and it was a pleasure to read them, even if I moaned and pouted my way through them.

So how about some super short Wrenchisms?

Our good friend Knutaf of Secret Moon Base fame uploaded another entry in his Dark Souls Science YouTube series! His examination of run speeds with various armour loads was fascinating to me, but more than that, I enjoyed the look into his methodology. Really cool stuff!

Dark Souls is the game that keeps on giving. After watching an incredible video of cut content the other day I thought I might have finally seen the last of Dark Souls secrets only to accidentally stumble upon a literary reference I never noticed in the game hours later!

I'm thinking of compiling a blog about the various literary, historical, and pop culture nods in the game. There are a lot of subtle nods to various people, places, and things tucked away in the game and even though the community at large knows about most of them, I don't think there is a single source anywhere that piles them all together.

Do I really have the balls to write yet ANOTHER Dark Souls blog? Am I that shameless? You know it.

* - RAGE THE CHART ON. I love this series of math blogs, fantastic stuff.

* - Some lovely music choices here. I always a sucker for this kind of blog.

* - Brazen Head takes a well written look at game length. Some great piffy lines in this blog.

A - Kratos, war god of the psychiatric ward.

A - I remember getting my wisdom teeth taken out. The Doc gave me percocet and I took the next day off school to trip through the local Halloween fair, Pumpkinfest. Good times.

A - I'm pretty open minded when it comes to experiment games, but there needs to be a payoff. If you don't have gameplay, don't have mood, and don't have a story, how exactly are you justifying your non-game's existence?

A - Where is Nintendo going? Ryne Sechrist scrys a few predictions in his Wii U controller screen.

A - Price of Persia: The Warrior Within is one of the biggest gaffes I can recall. I've seen franchises go dark and edgy before in a desperate grasp for sales, but I've never seen one jump so far off the deep end. What a shame.

A - I would totally play a fighting game with Ash from Evil Dead, the Xenomorph from Alien, and Arnold doing his Bavarian thing.

A - Voltech takes a look at how many "empowered women" characters seem to be called that because they essentially act like men. Kinda messed up. Personally, I'd like to see deeper characterizations in games for both sexes.

C - Free games! OpiumHerz must be Santa! Either that or Hitler! I don't know, the messaging behind this blog was kind of confusing! But you know, free games!

C - More games? MORE GAMES! Psyforce is an awesome dude.

N - Don't worry folks, Watch_Dogs hasn't been cancelled. You know, unless you own a Wii U.

N - Payday 2 should add a map where you rip off the PokeBank.

R - This review of Wolfenstein (2009) comes up to 6.3/10. I'm not exactly sure what .3 of a score means.

C - This place is looking for volunteer writers, but I didn't get a good vibe from the site... Which he or she forgot to link.

V - A LP of Little Sampson. Looks more than a little like a Capcom game. A little too much "inspiration" maybe.

S - This is Spinal Tap kind of played out the whole fake rockumentary bit.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
