LONG BLOG

C Blogs of 01/29/13 + Wrenchisms

   0

Man, I've got nothing today. I'm still getting over the massive response to my Dark Souls blog the other day. I'm extremely grateful to everyone who commented saying they liked it or could relate to it. Whenever you put something personal out, there is always a terrible fear that NOBODY will be able to relate to it and you'll just look crazy. Gotta say I'm glad that didn't happen.

Quick hits -

I finally got around to watching the first season of Archer. Holy shit. I've become a little jaded towards Adult Swim's self-referential shock humour style, but something about Archer tickled me just right. The vaguely unspecific Jet-Age+cellphones+USSR timeframe taps into my deep love of the Venture Bros and TF2. The fact that Lucile Bluth from Arrested Development is essentially a character in the show doesn't hurt. Plus I remember when the guy who does Archer's voice was Coach McGuirk on Home Movies. Good times.

My girlfriend introduced me to BadLipReadings on YouTube. I've wasted WAY too much time watching them.

Mechwarrior Online announced a new Hero Mech! It's a specialized version of my favourite chassis the Awesome! But- where are the nipple lasers? What's with the Orange County Chopper paint job? I DON'T PILOT AWESOMES TO FLING MISSILES. I PILOT AWESOMES TO SUCKLE THE ENEMY WITH MY PEWPEW BREASTS. Why is this so hard to understand?

* - Strider loves him some ME3 multiplayer. But just like the single player game, sometimes its tough to get everyone to play nice with each other.

A - People just want more from their $60 XBL subscription fee these days. Seems to be a hot topic.

A - It's not the game, it's the hypocrisy.

P - I want to listen to an entire podcast about Glam Rock Princesses now.

A - A blog discussing the distinction between sex used as a marketing device and sex used as subject matter, and how frequent the former is compared to the latter in the game industry. Some fine points... and a distressing number of references to Lolita and Moe anime girls.

R - Neat! Context Insensitive sounds like a fun little game. I'll have to check it out.

R - A video review for the new Legendaries update. I have to admit, I don't know ANYTHING about this game.

T - Some succinct thoughts about the future of console gaming.

R - DanielCampbell shares his video review for the lucid dream phenomenon known as The Real Texas.

F - A webshow about videogame culture by Skribble.

F - The should have bought the extension, Adobe After Effects 2000 and 1-Winged Angel.

C - Kinda spammy, kinda earnest.

R - A small news update and a bit of opinion on demo "betas."

? - This blog touched me in the bad place.

S - How bout a big bag of leaked spoilers for a game that hasn't even come out? Now with zero commentary or opinion!

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment

Overstuffed

Is there a holiday or time of the year more indulgent than Thanksgiving? I mean, we cook a turkey that weighs as much as three newborn babies, whip up about a billion sides consisting mostly of carbs and butter, and top the whole thing off with nine different pies, all featuring the main ingredient of "excess." It's equal parts disgusting and awesome, and is definitely my second favorite holiday behind our dearly departed Halloween.

But we were so occupied with whether we could eat six pounds of food in one sitting, that we didn't stop to think if we should. That brings us to November's Bloggers Wanted prompt: Overstuffed.

Playing through Horizon Zero Dawn really got me thinking on this topic. Don't get me wrong, the game has a really cool and fairly unique sci-fi story, the combat is fun and engaging, and the art direction uses vibrant color - a concept that largely died out near the end of the PS2 era, but man, is it long. The map is huge and stuffed with nooks, crannies and collectibles, and boy, by the time I wrapped the story and collected my Platinum trophy the game had really worn out its welcome. It's a shame really, as I truly enjoyed the game for its main components; but by the time I had picked off my ten-thousandth evil villager and performed my ten-billionth stealth kill on a Ravager, I found myself wishing the game would end soon.

I got this feeling about 3/4 of the way into the game. That is not good.

Modern gaming is great in that developers tend to pack in a metric shit-ton of things to do in their games. Modern gaming is also horrible because developers tend to pack in a metric shit-ton of things to do in their games. This tendency to overstuff their games with content is often overwhelming and can cause an otherwise excellent experience to drag. It was less of a problem when I was 18 and had all the time in the world; at 30 with a day job and a family, it's a complete game-changer.

So, beloved Destructoid Community, tell of us a time you felt overstuffed from gaming! It can be from a game you enjoyed that just felt too long like above, a time you binged on all thirty-two Kingdom Hearts titles, a particularly meaty haul of games you got at a yard sale - anything at all that celebrates or at least discusses your Thanksgiving-like excesses in gaming!

Write a blog with "Overstuffed:" and then your subject in the title, and let the world know of your girthy gaming experiences! We love promoting blogs to the front page here at Dtoid, and Bloggers Wanted is a great way to get noticed *wink wink nudge nudge hip thrust*

Happy blogging, everyone!
