Wowie Zowie! TES:Online has released a new trailer! Is everybody excited!?

No?

The new trailer is more CG fantasy like we've seen with SWTOR and WoW, big on spectacle and flash with no actual gameplay in sight. We get to see a barbarian dude stomp some monster-wolves (regular wolves are so passe), a ranger-ish elf-lady reenact the scaling the wall from ASOIAF, and the requisite cooldudeassasinbro rip up a whole group of soldiers with throwing knives and leg melting style.

I'm pretty skeptical about the game itself, but that didn't stop me from signing up for the beta. For all the run-of-the-mill combat dance and generic fantasy pastiche we've seen so far, some small part of me still wants to check it out for myself. I haven't found a fantasy MMO to be excited about since the days of Ragnarok Online (and that was kind of a masochistic thing), but if anyone can pull it off, it would be Bethesda. Sometimes I miss my City of Hero days and the fun I used to have exploring that world, making builds, and chatting with my cape and cowl buddies. If Bethesda can make a fantasy world half as engaging, I might spend a month or two with it just to dig that vibe again.

I don't know if I can ever go back to the combat dance though. After being so thoroughly spoiled by the depth, responsiveness, and tension of Dark Souls PvP, I'm not sure if clicking power buttons and keeping an eye on flying numbers will ever feel satisfying again. But I suppose I won't know unless I try!

Here's hoping TESO won't ruin them like SWTOR ruined Bioware!

Oh yeah, I wrote a blog about robots and jerkbags, maybe you should check it out!

* - Mega Man X CONSUMED me as a child. I still have drawing of X I made with tracing paper and copies of Nintendo Power.

* - The world of EVE Online never ceases to fascinate me. Such a wild and cutthroat game. I would love to read a book about the psychology of it's players and trends in the community.

* - Handy dishes out some double-barrelled sarcasm at the Big Bang Theory. Seriously, fuck that show.

A - James017 has a strong opinion that we're living in the best age of gaming and everything else that came before is crap compared to now. But when you're claiming Uncharted is a better game that Ocarina of Time... Well, it's a hard sell.

A - And almost as a counter point, GrimmTrix writes about his love of classic games and why many of them are still great, despite the leaps in technology.

A - A discussion about mature themes and gaming.
I - He's new and wayward, be gentle.

R - Travis Crawford posts an extended video review and small write up for Path of Exile. Don't know much about the game, but kinda digging that Witch character. Seems spoooooky.

R - Neat little review for what sounds like a neat little game! I didn't even know there were interactive novel games on the Kindle, maybe I'll check out Choice of Zombies.

M - "aaahhhAAHHHAaaaaAAHHH AH... ahhhAAAhhaa..." get all your favourite iconic monk chants on vinyl.

L - Writing for Mario is tough.

R - A still frame from Cabin in the Woods where you can read all the lovely monsters kept in containment.

C - Kinda spammy, but it's hard to hate small studios trying to get their name out.

- For real though, TESO's Spiderlady thing has nuttin' on Quelaag

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
First Kiss

No matter what the experience was or which game or genre left that strong first impression, such experiences have the potential to open our eyes to the rich history of a series or genre. With any luck, we might find even more to love or something better. A great first experience with RPGs could lead to an undying love affair.

Sometimes a first kiss can be so impactful that the game gets placed on a pedestal and enshrined as a gold standard, which has its own pros and cons. I mean, it is nice to have a basis for comparison, but some folks take it too far. There are people who loved Half-Life, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy VII so much that nothing after them really got a fair shake.

So first impressions matter -- they can shape and inform our gaming habits. I grew up on arcades, Nintendo, handhelds, and eventually into RPGs, so much of what I play will be influenced by how I acquired my tastes. I probably like Overwatch a ton because it has a passion for RPG roles, but contextualizes them closer to older shooters focused on objectives more than gear builds and grinding out perks for better killstreaks.

So for this month's Bloggers Wanted, we'd like you head over to the community blogs write about your first kiss, the games that positively influenced you or maybe biased you a little too much for a time. What turned you on to a series or genre? Was it love at first sight? Did it set any expectations in stone or possibly lead you to something better?

Whatever the case might be, remember to use the title "First kiss" and place "Bloggers Wanted" in the tags!
