C blogs of 01/16/12 + mcgeeisms

I'd like to give a shout-out to the Destructoid Mutant League Fantasy Football guys. The season just finished, and a bunch of cool prizes will be handed out to the winners. (3rd place for ol' mcgee) It's a fun thing to do with fellow Dtoiders, and about the nerdiest thing you can achieve within sports. Yay for fantasy sports! So shouts to ArcticFox, ChillyBilly, Blehmeng, JTIceFire/OnWNES, JohnnyViral, ZombiePlatypus, bbrigg, sm00velikebutta, and Drtglems. It was fun; looking forward to next year.

One day...

* - Cutie Honey dropped some mad funny animation on our heads. This one is worth checking out immediately. (Damn video embedding shortage) It's also now on the front page! Wow!

* - Lowlander2 keeps up his videogame movie reviews, god bless him. Not an easy job.

* - Sir Tobii asks A GOD DAMNED GOOD QUESTION. You best believe the Monday recaps will be all about F-Zero if there isn't news of a new one by September. You've been warned.

* - Wherein Elsa ruins my fantasy. Not really. But she does think the imagery in games and other media is indeed harmful. Come read on and weigh in.

A - Irrational Internationals, of them, tries to explain why "retro" games excite some of us so.

M - I like that. Games that you can find for a good price, with DLC support. 2011 in 2012!

A - Niche gaming. Is there really such a thing? Hmm...

A - Big jugs seem to be something of a running theme today. Come witness TheManChild audition for the next 1800 tequila commercial. :)

P - :D Yet another new podcast in the Destructoid community. I'll be honest: I haven't listened to it yet. Consider it Topsauce anyway because I was paid off in decoder rings and e-mouth e-sex.

E - ATTENTION EURO-TOIDERS: EuroNARP 4.4 is happening February 2. If you're over dem seas (or can get there, ya rich bastard) come enjoy beers games, and lovely company. Now-not-so-surprise guests Niero and Hamza Sharkman will be there to touch you softly. Come enjoy yourselves!

I - "DC" is new here, and thought he would sorta kinda tell you about MW3. Go welcome him as you see fit.

T - Rhuno doesn't think there is as big a problem as some with misogyny in games. Do you agree or disagree?

T - Dave played El Shaddai and League of Legends this week. Come to his thought cavern.

$ - This one will unfortunately not be useful by the time you read this, but it's a damn fine sale. Also, it's 1.21 Gigawatts, stupid.

T - A popular problem 'round these parts. How can anyone at Destructoid be having their pudding?

T - Battlefield 3 hasn't really taken off for Writer yet, but he's trying. Any tips?

T - Patrick Likes Club Nintendo's new options. It's a good idea, even though I wish they had rarer games for choosin'. Whatchu thank?

T - Online co-op zombie game. It's not the one you're thinking of.

A - Wow. I can't wait to see this thing in full. Pixelart + can you go wrong there?

? - I still can't tell if this is a spam account.

R - Syn gets political. Definitely read if you're interested in that sort of thing.

The heel-turn

Last week, in the quick posts of Destructoid's community, we saw the rise and fall of community manager Wesley J. Russow. He rose to prominence with his immutable power, only to see it come crashing down as the working class clambered beneath him and tore him down. Truly, the life and times of Westopher G. Raggamuffins was a lesson in live fast, burn hot, crash spectacularly.

Wes went from community darling to lovable despot over the course of a few days. It was a thing of beauty to behold. Truly, nothing is better to witness than a real-life heel turn. Wrestling is nothing without these terms after all. A "Face" is a good guy wrestler who fights the man, stands up for the little guy, and fights fairly while still winning. A "Heel", on the other hand, is a despicable, dastardly villain or even anti-hero. I loved Kurt Angle's antics as this gold medal Olympic winner turned wrestler who wasn't necessarily as likable as his gold medals imply. I loved hating that guy! A good heel is fun to hate, and there's nothing quite like the gasp of shock when watching the turn, when a face uses dirty tricks and turns into a heel.

Let me ask you this: is Kratos a hero? Before we see Kratos return in what I'd call Dad of War, let's not forget Kratos’ sordid past as a hero. In the first game, it was a revenge tale. It was a story of a mythical Spartan warrior who wanted revenge on the God of War who betrayed him. But as the series went on, it became a story about the lengths Kratos would go to justify his vendetta against people who wronged him. He would literally destroy the world just to destroy his enemies. Sure, we played as him, and we were taken on a ride, but would you really put your bet behind him and say, "Yeah, look at that hero!"

This month's Bloggers Wanted is about your favorite heel-turns or anti-heroes (in case a heel turn is too specific). Do you like it when Ryu turns into Evil Ryu? Or maybe you like Injustice, with its built in heel-turn Superman? I won't claim to understand the time line of Revolver Ocelot between Snake Eater and Guns of the Patriots, but I love that knucklehead.

To participate, just start a blog in our community section and title it "Heel-turn: [your blog title here]." Write to your heart's content, and if its up to snuff, you'll see your stuff published on the front page! Just remember, you're telling us about your favorite heel-turns and anti-heroes, not becoming one yourself, like Wes. Rest in spaghetti, never forghetti.
