LONG BLOG

C-Blog recaps of 9/15/12 + 9/16/12 + Philgasms

   0

What a good week folks. Been hot here in Sacramento, but not too bad. The big news that affects us this week, is the community teams excellent tribute to us c-bloggers. Man, that's awesome stuff. A lot of Wii U talk has been going on. I'm still torn on it myself, but leaning towards buy, atm. Rayman, Nintendo Land, 101, Bayonetta 2 and a few others, are winning me over. I'm not completely sold yet though. I'm perfectly happy with my current setup. I don't have faith in the controller tablet being properly used, outside of first party titles of course. I'm still worried about their online system and I'm just kind of meh on any new toys atm. I'm sure it'll be a great system and all and no matter what, I get the joy of listening to all the Nintendo is doomed stuff again. Oh well, we'll see what comes down the pipe in the next few months and if it can sway me or not.

Been really digging into LBP this weekend. Very fun little game that finally clicked with me, as I haven't enjoyed too much of the previous titles, outside of playing with my kids. Something about the whole package, just finally feels right. Don't even get me started on my giddiness for the memorizer either. Sooooo much potential there now (as if there wasn't before). Here's a description of the memorizer, in case you're not familiar (from IGN):

This will allow user-created games to save, which means that user created “levels” can now be stand-alone titles within the LittleBigPlanet world. Players will be able to play a “level” that’s really a game, unlock stages, level-up characters, or whatever the creator imagines. Players will also be able to save their progress and come back for more later.

Oh man, I'm excited to use that and also see what the community comes up with now. Will have to wait until Tuesday though, when Sony turns on the servers (which hasn't been done yet, because they broke the street date Friday). I bet we are going to see some crazy stuff.

I also picked up FTL off of Steam this weekend. Oh man, this one is going to get me. It's hard to describe but basically it's a ship sim (not space, ship), roguelike, with turn based (yet real-time) combat and the thrill of exploration and discovery. Oh and permadeath. Yeah, this one is going to get me. Only had time for one playthrough today, but I'm already plotting on less sleep tonight, to do one more.

Look at that. Re-route power to weapons and shields! Put out those goddamn fires! Shit, we need more power to the O2 room! Sorry, but I got pirates to take down, civis to save and galaxy to explore. Lets get on with the caps, shall we?

*- Atheos spits out a fantastic Guild Wars 2 write up.
*- An awesome, pictorial, emotional, PAX journey by MeanderBot.
*- Bbain gives us some excellent previews of upcoming (and some already released) indies.

A- MonkeyKing1969 gives us an excellent article, on his ideas for improving Dragon's Dogma.
S- Blast73 starts a promising new series, about Permadeath in Minecraft. I'd like to see this branch out into other games as well.
A- An excellent article on understanding villians and their many roles. Thanks Falldog.
S- A travel blog from Conrad Zimmerman, detailing his TGS trip. Lucky S.O.B. Good luck on that jet lag man.
A- TSP rips off the rose-tinted shades and takes an honest look at the Dreamcast and why it shouldn't be used as a comparison tool.

C- Last chance to win Shattered Horizon. I'll pick the winner tomorrow morning and have an update up in the afternoon.

C- TroyFullbuster ponders if time in games actually matters. I ponder if it can be put in a bottle.
I- Ninjapresident plays get to know you and has a serious Segway fetish. What a wierdo :)
D- Swishiee shares some PAX pics and stuff and shares his thoughts on the community. Please leave a joke about Andy's moustache in the comments.

N- A personal opinion on the Bayonetta 2 fiasco, from FrDouglas9000. Personally I think we're lucky to even have it and should all STFU.
N- Some douche nozzle gives us the news that Sony broke LBP Vita's street date. Available now at your local Gamestop. Power to the player. Playa.
V- CheapBossAttack gives us a Let's Play of Slender. Then he just gets disgusting in the comments with some whore. We expect better from you Cheap. *shakes head*
T- SubZero5268 shares some thoughts on Pop-n-Music for Wii and it doesn't sound too hot. Then SubZero is harpooned by Scorpion. *Pulls off mask and breathes fire* Fatality
T- Stavros, Grecian Harbinger of Doom plays NSMB Wii and finds it lacking. It must be destroyed.
T- DavoTron gives some quick thoughts on Black Mesa. I need to install and play it. Mmmmm Black Mesa....
T- Strider shares his reservations and some criticisms about the Wii U. Can you change his mind on it? Tune in at 11 to find out how.

M- Nihil drops some dope beats on us. Freshness expands in the comments.

C- TheKodu speculates all over next gens face. But could use some sources and exposition.
C- Ickda finally starts (kind of) to explain what he's doing here and to engage us. Let's guide his cock... not block it, guide it.

F- Promote his cuss MOTHERF**KERS
F- I woulds been happies if yous like dies by wolves in fires, Toki. Dies by wolves. In fires.

That's some lovely writing, me buckos. I just want to say, while I may be occasionally critical of the community and can be an ass, I love you guys. It's an honor to be a recapper now and an honor to know many (not all) of you. You are my other family and I wouldn't want it any other way. Other than actually getting to meet you folks, that is. Even you Smurfee. I'm going to go play FTL now and hate myself in the morning, goodnight.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
