C-Blog recaps of 2/9/13 + 2/10/13 + (Phil)gasms

Blarg. It's almost Valentine's Day. *vomits* In my bitter old age, I've grown to hate this holiday. It does nothing but remind me of past failures and my perpetual alone state. Plus I'm just a grumpy asshole from all the pain of my surgery. Been cutting back on the pain pills and just dealing with the constant NEVER ENDING hurt side of my face. But the few times a day I do indulge.... man do I have fun. ENOUGH COMPLAINING!

Let's see.... what have I been playing? A lot of Darkness II. It matches my current mood perfectly and I love soloing the co-op. Been getting down in more Don't Starve of course (next blog coming this week). My second play through of Spec Ops is almost done. It was started by the limbo theory I read in a recent cblog and online in the wiki a few days prior to that. I have to say, after hearing certain things Walker says and experiencing it all again, it's safe to say that's not just a theory. I won't delve too much into that, because spoilers and such.

What else... Walking Dead starts again tonight. My DVR is currently recording the crap out of that. I probably won't watch it for another couple of weeks though. Just not a big TV guy, even though I'm excited to see it. Every time I go to sit down and watch something, I can't help but think of other stuff that needs doing and bam! I'm back up and doing house stuff or tinkering with something.

I am pretty god damn excited for Colonial Marines this Tuesday though. I've heard reports that it isn't that great of game... unless you're a huge fan of the Aliens series though. Quite disheartening, but my buddy pre-ordered from Origin and has been playing since Friday (some weird work around/crack). He said as a fan, it's a 9/10. As just a gamer 6/10 maybe 7. Can't say I'm too shocked, considering how long it languished in development, but I'm still very pleased to hear it's good fan service. A little pissed bug hunt mode is pre-order crap/DLC, but such is life these days. I won't be buying a season pass at all, just don't trust those things. I will grab whatever DLC ends up being decent on it's first Steam sale though. Alright, let's cap this weekend Hoff.

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
