LONG BLOG

C-Blog Recaps for 8/25/13 + Jinxisms

   0

Slow day for C-blogs, probably because a lot of us are going back to school this week. I am as well, and I probably haven't prepared enough, but I suppose you'll have that.

Though I love my Horipad EX2 Turbo (best D-pad ever), I finally broke down and picked Microsoft's Wireless 360 Controller for Windows. I have several 360 controllers for my PC, but nothing wireless, so I figured it was time to upgrade. It works great, I feel dumb for waiting this long to get one. The receiver also lets you sync regular wireless 360 controllers to your PC, up to four total. Pretty great for local multiplayer action.

Mini "unboxing" for y'all.

If I were to describe my week-in-gaming in one word, it would have to be "indecisive". I'm hesitant to plunge into a new game full-on with school starting, so I've just been hopping back and forth between games, old and new, playing each a little bit. I believe in an "omnivorous" gaming diet – versus obsessing over one game like an MMO – and I suppose this week's menu shows that. I'm a bit too burnt for much commentary today… and there's that whole school thing to work on after this… so I'll just share a gallery of some of my gaming exploits this week…

There's always time for a little Skyrim...

You can keep your Divekick, I'm sticking with Skullgirls!

Sins of a Solar Empire, the game that finally tore me away from Master of Orion II.

Poker Night 2... I don't even like Poker that much, but this game is worth it for the lols.

Sick of Star Trek Online, but I have to visit my ship and crew every once in a while...

Fly'N is a great platformer. Don't let the cute graphics fool you, it eventually gets pretty tricky.

So... RPG, fighting game, RTS, card game, MMO, and platformer. Can anyone beat that diversity this week?! lol

And now, on to Sunday's whopping seven C-blogs! C'mon, guys, I'm gonna run out of stupid memes to fill in the blanks at this rate! Pretty sure I'm already repeating myself by accident. Don't make me do entire recaps of nothing but Ponies and Spiderman!

* - Death of the Arcade - great blog by GlowBear on what made arcades special and why they're mostly gone now.

Yes, that does say 1989 Ralston Purina Co. down there. Yes, it did taste like dog food.

S - Steam - Skid Row Trash tells us about his awesome luck with Steam Trading Cards and Coupons.

T - Wii U - Salvador thinks the Wii U and Nintendo get too much hostile criticism. Hostility ensues.

V - Gone Home Review - TokyoChicken has put together a nice video review of Gone Home. Definitely check it out if you're interested in the game, or in some commentary on it.

P - Final Fantasy XIV: ARR - Jeremy says the game itself is great... when you can play it.

P - Final Fantasy XIV: ARR - Konchu elaborates on the problems the re-release of the MMO is already experiencing.

I hear some of you don't like the idea of gender-swapping game characters.

SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO WATCH THE WORLD BURN.

S - Aaron needs... help or something...

Not sure if people realize this... but 95% of the screenshots I post are shots I took myself. I'm really not a fan of generic promotional shots, and if I'm going to post shots I'd rather they be fresh.

Which reminds me, I played a bit of Sonic Racing Transformed this week, too...

Good gaming, and good luck with classes to those of you who are back in school!

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Crowdfunded

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
