LONG BLOG

C-Blog Recaps for 6/16/13 + Jinxisms

   0

Didn't spend a lot of time gaming this last week because all the news and drama from E3 was so engrossing. But... still a few things worth mentioning.

I checked out Akaneiro: Demon Hunters Saturday, a new game by Spicy Horse. It's still in development, but so far it's good fun. I backed it on Kickstarter so I got a free Steam key for early access. Feels somewhere between Diablo and Zelda 1, which is not a bad thing. The game takes place in Japan, and the watercolor-styled visuals are quite cool. Worth keeping an eye on. It will be free-to-play, the early access kit just gets you some extra goodies.

I've also been tinkering with a 3rd person hack I found for Borderlands 2 (PC). You wouldn't want it on all the time (you can toggle it), but it's a neat change and quite playable. Since the game lets you customize your character, it's nice to actually see them in-game rather than just on the inventory and title screen.

So yeah, my Wii U hate has been somewhat... excessive. Seriously, I think I need medication or something. HOWEVER. I'm finally startin' to feel some love for the 'ol Wee-ooo. Super Mario 3D World had me jumping up in down in my seat like a little kid. It's not quite the Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy type game I was hoping for, but... kittie suit OMG ADORABLE AAAAAHHHH!!!! *bounces*

Now, on to those C-Blogs!

* - bigboss0110 shares a fun and uplifting blog about how New Super Mario Bros. U made him feel like a kid again. He managed to get ME excited about a Wii U game, that's sauce-worthy right there.

Word of the day, courtesy of the Torgue vending machines in Borderlands 2...

This is actually a thing that is happening...

E - Marcunio tells us about his trip to "Etoo" London- a small, more intimate event that's quite the counterpoint to E3.
S - YesConsiderably talks about the interesting method he used to seek out a new gaming handle for his shift to Playstation. He needn't worry, though, picking your second gaming nick is-
I - Calidreth gives us a (re) introduction, and talks about his love of writing about gaming.
S - dergrimnebulin (okay that's a mouthful) shares a touching story about his childhood, his family, and Super Mario Bros.

T - Nick Di Fulvio shares his thoughts on Nintendo's E3 showing.
R - Willza gives us an excellent, upbeat review of Remember Me. I'd throw in a few pics to mix things up next time, though.
P - KeiththeGeek gives us an in-depth look at how the Villager character might play in the new Super Smash Bros. game. SB and fighting game fans will appreciate this one.
T - TheManchild expresses his excitement for Final Fantasy XIV, and puts it in context with some other MMOs and FF titles.

S - ZombieePanda ordered a special 3DS XL - an Animal Crossing: New Leaf one! She's looking for recommendations on a good case for the XL. Hopefully when she gets the system she can give us a mini-review!

L - Moth informs us that Xbox One games may not be playable on the system until about 2015. Because television?

F - I'm sorry, Nihil, but this Remember Me "review" is not that funny and potentially offensive :/

And finally, you Fake Nerd Boys are getting called the hell out!

Current "Bloggers Wanted" assignment
Changes

It feels like it's been a decade since we've seen the rise of the crowdfunded game. I'm always surprised when I remind myself that crowdfunding has been a thing long before the first crowdfunded video game, but nowadays a crowdfunded game seems like a dime a dozen.

Of course such a phrase is an incredible disservice to some of the great games that have come out thanks to websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Games like FTL, Shovel Knight, and even Undertale are around thanks to crowdfunding; thanks to people gathering around and literally putting their money where their mouth is, a game they want gets funded and inevitably the greater landscape of gaming benefits from it. Most of the time the landscape gets to benefit from it anyways.

Don't worry though, this month's bloggers wanted prompt isn't an exploratory thesis on the effects of crowdfunding on video game development. We just want you to talk about your favorite games, as long as they were crowdfunded. This topic can be simultaneously broad and narrow, because you can talk about whatever game you want, however you want, as long as it was crowdfunded.
For me, FTL is the original crowdfunded game, and it was great. It was somehow minimalist and incredibly detailed at the same time, and it was all done because a man wanted to do it, but needed the money, and thousands of other people wanted to see where his idea would go. Shovel Knight to me feels like this natural evolution of the classic 8-bit gaming of yore without also throwing myself back to a time when gaming was honestly comparatively archaic. And everyone's talked to death about Undertale, so we all know where I'd go with that.

To participate in this month's bloggers wanted, just start a blog! Oh, and title it "Crowdfunded: [your blog title here]." I bet this month is going to be pretty diverse, since it's basically writing about your favorite crowdfunded game. So I hope to hear about some good games revisited or amazing games no one has heard about.

Remember: Persona 5 was not crowdfunded, but excuse me as I plow through it.
