Phils Game/Pop Music Similarities #51 - Beating A Dead Snake

Featuring Metal Gear Solid and Miklós Rózsa.

Greetings fellow game music lovers,

as you know people have been looking for similarities in their favourite pop culture work since pop culture started existing. Even for video games, I encountered many ancient mailing lists and irc logs where people talk about which classic work of which classic composer has been liften the most often by lazy Atari engineers. Sometimes it's just a sample or a short jingle that shows a similarity, sometimes whole passages, rarely significant parts of whole songs.

Often these findings don't leave their ancient newsgroup or their Youtube comment section, only to be forgotten when the accompanying video is deleted. One of the intents of this blog is, of course, to remedy this situation. ;)

Sometimes however they a similarity gathers so much notoriety, that it sweeps through the community like a desert wind, with serious consequences for everyone involved in the production. One of these occurences is the original Metal Gear Solid theme, that used to play througout the E3 trailers in 1997. I don't think I have to comment at large on this one, it has become quite infamous and is often cited as the primary reason while the theme has been seemingly removed from the franchise altogether. For those who are still in the dark, please watch these videos:

But there has to be some original stuff in the song, right? It's over 5 minutes long and not everything sounds like a russian neoromantic composer. Like this passage about one minute in:

Well, such electronic beats are not that common. But there are other genres. Like the soundtrack from the monumental movie El Cid (1961) by Miklós Rózsa which I leave for your judgement:

Sometimes I think Charlton Heston is in every desert related movie before 1970.
