I'm sure many of you are aware of the Sony hack that happened recently, and the buckets full of information coming out of behind the scenes emails.
We've heard about failed talks between Sony and Marvel for a Spiderman crossover in the next Captain America, but now we've got some new info!
According to Buzzfeed, this information was discovered:
“I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic],” producer Avi Arad told Sony Studio Chief Amy Pascal in an email dated Oct. 23, 2014, with the subject line “Mario.” Arad then forwarded Pascal separate images of him with Mario Bros.creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the latter of which included the message, “Happy ceo, lets get together, it’s the mother load [sic]."
Pascal forwarded that email to Tom Rothman, who heads up Sony Pictures subsidiary TriStar Pictures. “Avi closed Mario brothers,” she said. “Animated.”
Avi Arad is the current producer of the Spiderman movies. He's essentially the Kevin Feige of Sony. He... kind of sucks. But it's up to you to interpret whether this information is true, and if so whether the movie will be good or not.
I find this very interesting, as in the last decade Nintendo has been fairly protective of their characters when it comes big screen appearances. If you get a chance, read up on Nintendo's involvement in Wreck It Ralph, where they demanded very minute details to be displayed in Bowser's animations. "No, Bowser would not drink coffee like that. He would drink it like this."
Perhaps this means Nintendo is changing things up? They already are doing ads with Playboy, so it's not too surprising.
As a side note, I actually like the old Super Mario Bros Movie. It's fun and crazy, and has Dennis Hopper being a weird motherfucker.
What do you guys think?
