My Top Five Anticipated Releases of April 2021

   0

Another month in 2021, another month of light game releases and dodgy release dates. Still, I managed to whip up five games to look forward to, so here they are.

The game has to release on at least one major systems (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch). I do not count re-releases or remasters, but I may make an exception for remakes. One thing I do count is a game either entering or exiting Early Access, but that game can only be counted once. If a game has multiple release dates like Destiny 2 or GTA 5, then I will only count the earliest release date. The exception to that is if the game has a pre-order bonus of entering the game early, in which I will count its normal release date. Finally, it has to be a game, not a DLC. With the rules out of the way, here are my top five anticipated titles of April.

5. New Pokemon Snap

New Pokemon Snap is a photography game by Bandai Namco and a sequel to 1999’s Pokemon Snap about taking pictures of Pokemon. The Pokemon franchise has always escaped my interest despite its collection aspect being appealing to me, but New Pokemon Snap is a different kind of game. A lot of people have talked highly of the original game, and I think maybe trying to photograph ‘em all may do it for me. Plus, watching the slow on-rails gameplay reminds me of a theme park ride at Disneyland or Universal Studios, which I think could be fun. New Pokemon Snap will release on the 30th for Switch.

4. Century: Age of Ashes

Century: Age of Ashes is a competitive multiplayer game by Playwing LTD about flying dragons and competing against others to win various objectives. I have yet to play a flying game or a dogfighting game, but I think this is an interesting take on that genre. I don’t have high hopes for the longevity of this game’s player base (but I’d say the same thing about a lot of multiplayer games from smaller developers), but I’m always interested in seeing a multiplayer game try something new. Century: Age of Ashes will release into Early Access on PC sometime this month.

3. Insurmountable

Byterockers’ Game’s Insurmountable is an adventure rogue-lite about climbing a mountain. As a climber, I find the ways games handle climbing intriguing, and this game is no exception. This game seems to be more about the strategy of climbing and the management of the character’s life stats more than anything, which I think is an interesting angle. Plus, the procedural maps means better replayability. Insurmountable will release on the 29th for PC.

2. Outriders

People Can Fly’s Outriders is a third-person looter shooter about humans trying to find a new planet to call home. Even now, I don’t think too highly of this game, but I needed something to fill up this list. I’m not a big fan of looter shooters like Destiny and The Division, so this game isn’t a big appeal to me. Still, at the very least, I think the setting and the story sounds neat, some of the player abilities look cool, and I can usually extract some fun from the early hours of games like this. Outriders will release on the 1st for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC.

1. Returnal

Housemarque’s Returnal is a third-person shooter about a pilot who crash lands on an alien planet and is stuck in a time loop. I initially didn’t think much of this game, but after watching some recent gameplay I’ve changed my mind. Returnal looks like a blast. It’s fast-paced gameplay reminds me of a faster Risk of Rain 2, the setting looks neat, and I’m interested in seeing how the game handles its rogue-lite mechanics. Returnal will release on the 30th for PS5.

That is going to wrap up this list. Thank you for reading, and tune in next month for another set of releases.
