Electronic Arts has announced a new title in the Battlefield series today, this one called Battlefield Play4Free. It’s a PC title and to play it, it’ll cost you exactly what you’d expect — nothing.

The game is said to be a “deep PC shooter featuring signature Battlefield vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay, and intense 32-player online battles. They’re currently accepting signs up for the closed beta on its website; those accepted will get a chance to start shooting at things at the end of November.

EA calls the game a combination of Battlefield 2 and Bad Company 2, with the most popular maps from the former and the classes and weapons of the latter. Expect some kind of link between Play4Free, Battlefield Heroes (which is also free to play) and the upcoming Battlefield 3

What’s the catch? Well, microtransactions of course, although EA is quiet on the specifics. But from what we can tell, the core experience won’t cost you a cent, so that’s the good news. Expect it to be go wide in spring of 2011.
