Alex Kurtzman is working on four new Star Trek shows for CBS, Picard may return

Tea, Earl Grey, hot... again

With the success of Star Trek: Discovery on CBS's All Access, and that nasty business with its showrunner getting ousted for verbal abuse, CBS is full steam ahead with Alex Kurtzman leading the way on building their own corner of the Star Trek universe. So much so that they've inked a $25 million deal with Kurtzman to oversee the franchise for the next five years, developing multiple shows over that time.

Variety is reporting that these shows include:

  • A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. Think something along the lines of a CW show in the Star Trek universe, and than stop rolling your eyes because most CW shows are pretty fun if you think about it.
  • A mystery limited run series (more on this below)
  • A limited run series about KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
  • An animated series whose plot details are super secret, but better involve as much canon breaking crap as the original animated series did.

Now, about that limited run series. THR has heard rumors it is a Next Generation sequel starring none other than Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc-Picard, and... damn it, I've messed my pants. I don't know about you guys, but the more effing Picard in our lives the better. It isn't clear on what it would be about, but I'm down for anything from ACTING to an introspective study on the PTSD that one gains from becoming part of the Borg.

So more Star Trek. A lot more Star Trek. Whether or not it'll be through All Access again is unknown, but I'm fine with creating multiple emails to binge all the series during free one week trials like I did for Discovery
