After adding game-impacting items to the Fallout 76 microtransaction store, Bethesda doles out free stuff

The Fallout 76 team landed in hot water again after the news broke that they were planning on adding repair kits to the microtransaction store: months after Bethesda's Pete Hines noted that game-impacting items couldn't be purchased with real money.

Amid this perilous patch (8.5), Bethesda comes bearing gifts (as is customary for the Atom Shop), hoping that no one will shoot the messenger. If you log in at some point you'll net a "give gift" emote, as well as a punch bowl cosmetic for your C.A.M.P., and a Sheepsquatch faux movie poster. The former two have no planned expiration date but if you want the jovial horror poster you'll want to log in by the May 7 cutoff date.

New premium items, including the Mad Max-esque war rider paint cosmetic and the Steampunk/BioShock-inspired Nukashine paint, are also on sale through May 7. They'll run you 1,400 Atoms each, or in non-funny money, around $14 per. Some premium content is also on sale through May 2 onward to May 7: you can find the full list below.

As more and more premium content is added it really makes me wonder if Fallout 76 couldn't have been free-to-play. Just scale down the map to accommodate the decreased production cost and bam: it wouldn't have been held to a higher standard because "it's free" and probably would have had a legion of Fallout fans buying stuff for it.

We’ve made a number of existing items available at reduced Atom prices, but these discounts won’t last forever! Be sure to unlock any items that catch your eye before they return to their regular prices on the dates listed below.
