I was really nervous about having a new roommate this year. He was my friend's brother, but I knew next to nothing about him. Would we even like each other? Would he not clean up his share of the room? Would he play Madden and Guitar Hero until 4:00 in the morning like my last roommate?
Well, my college is located in the city I live in and Freshman get to move in a couple of days earlier than returning students. So yesterday I decided that since my new roommate was moving in, it would be a good time to take a couple of items to my room so that I wouldn't have to move everything at once and also to meet him.
Now, it was safe to say that my roommate played video games and he's my friend's brother so I assumed he was pretty cool. However, he probably didn't realize that the only console I take the dorms with me is my Super Nintendo... I realized this assumption was accurate when I saw the look on his face as I mounted my crappy TV and my lone SNES onto the shelf he brought. A kid passed by and shouted "YEAH! Super Nintendo!" while another said "Isn't that kind of... You know... Old?" However, my roommate remained silent as I sat down to take a break and play TMNT: Turtles in Time.
He quietly sat and watched me play (like he had anything better to do.) until I switched over to Mega Man X. I asked him if he wanted to play and he shyly declined... I felt utterly defeated and a bit heart broken... Later on, when I was about to go home, I told him to feel free to play after I left and went to get a drink of water from the fountain. I passed by my room one more time as I headed out and noticed him sifting through my large box of Super Nintendo games. My heart leaped a bit and I felt a flicker of hope return as I walked to my car...
The next day (today) I returned after buying a new game to play it and add it to my collection. He wasn't in the room, however I noticed that his pillow and blanket were on MY bed (the bed closest to the TV) and the controller was as well. Also, I saw that I couldn't play my new game because he had left the SNES on!
I turned on the TV only to see that he had paused a game of Mega Man X and turned off the TV so he wouldn't lose his progress! From the looks of things he had played the SNES all night too! He had a stack of games in front of the TV that he had pulled out of the box and played. Among them were Super Mario Kart, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter 2, and others. I was so freaking excited!
I'm really looking forward to this school year after this and maybe I'll actually have someone to play Secret of Mana with now!
